Abstract
170,138. Smith, A. K. T., and Davis, A. L. July 27, 1920. Flash signals; intermittent signals.-A flame-colouring agent for illuminating or signalling purposes is carried into the flame on a travelling mechanical carrier which passes through an agent-container. The carrier may be an endless chain, or band. As shown in Fig. 3, it may tahe the form of a disc 28, which, if made with an interrupted periphery, Fig. 4, produces intermittent coloured flashes if the original flame is colourless. If the flame is too hot for the carrier, the colour may be introduced into it, by way of a lower temperature flame 35. Fig. 5, impinging upon it. The carrier may dip into a solution of the agent, or may be formed with scoops or pockets for the supply of a solid agent. Overheating and consequent fusion of the travelling-band may be prevented by coupling the motor control to the fuel supply control so as to prevent heating of the band while it is stationary, and by the provision of means for automatically swing- ing the band out of the flame in the event of stoppage of the motor.
