Matte and other dry processes of extracting metals; treating ores to remove volatile constituents; distilling metals.-Complex ores are melted with fluxes in a furnace: oxides of antimony, arsenic, &c., are volatilized and recovered, and the molten product is discharged into the middle one of three compartments of a separator k, the compartments being separated by partitions so arranged that the heavy metals, matte, &c., pass into one side compartment from which they are discharged, while the lighter parts pass to the other side compartment and thence through a passage o to a reduction furnace f. A blast consisting of powdered wood charcoal and carbon monoxide is supplied to the furnace through tuyeres j, volatile metals such as zinc escaping through an outlet h, and the molten product being passed through a separator p. The furnace f and the separators k, p, may be externally heated, and the furnace a may be electric. The whole of the apparatus may be combined into a single furnace structure.
