Abstract

169,763. Benson, M. June 7, 1920. Hydrocarbons, distilling.-The volatile constituents of crude petroleum or bituminous substances such as oil emulsions, asphalt, tar sands, &c. are separated by mixing the oil &c. with superheated steam or other heated vapour or gas. Oil is pumped from a tank 1 through a meter 4 and valve 5 to a chamber 6 to which steam under pressure from a superheater 7 is passed. The mixture passes through a regulating-valve 12 to an expansion vessel 13 from which the vapours pass to a condenser 16. The steam passed into the chamber 6 may be under a pressure of 100 lb. per sq. in. and at a temperature of 750-1000‹ F. Sulphur dioxide or carbon dioxide may be used in place of steam when reaction with the sulphur compounds is desired, and higher pressures and addition of reagents such as sodium or calcium hydroxide may be used to effect liberation of ammonia or sulphuretted hydrogen.
