Abstract

167,029. Boerner, A. May 21, 1920. Ventilating aircraft; air, heating and cooling; ventilation; valves and valve apparatus, actuating.-To maintain normal atmospheric pressure in aircraft at high altitudes, the fuselage is supplied with air by a compressor, and is made airtight and divided into two or more compartments by partitions with reducing valves. The fuselage shown is divided by partition 2, 3 into compartments 4, 5, 6. A centrifugal air compressor 10 mounted on the shaft of the engine 9 draws air through a forwardly projecting mouthpiece 11 and delivers compressed air through a pipe 12 to the compartment 6. When the pressure is slightly higher than one atmosphere, a reducing valve 7 opens, and similarly, when there is a pressure drop of say 0.1 atmosphere between the passenger's compartment 5 and the engine and pilot's compartment 4, the valve 8 opens. The Specification contains a calculation showing that. at a height of 5000 metres, the increase in temperature of the air due to compression is at least 20‹ C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 11784/11, [Class 4, Aeronautics].
