Abstract

Zinc-lead and like sulphide ores and concentrates are suspended in a solution of a chloride of a metal having two valencies such as iron or tin and chlorine is passed directly into the acidified mixture. Lead and silver are converted into chlorides and the zinc sulphide remains unattacked. The lead chloride is dissolved out from the residue by brine and the silver chloride by ammonia or sodium thiosulphate. Specification 22235/05 is referred to. According to one Provisional Specification, the invention is applicable to lead-silver and copper-silver ores, and in the treatment of a material containing tin oxide, copper, bismuth, arsenic, antimony, silver, and lead the tin oxide remains unattacked, the copper dissolves as chloride, the antimony, arsenic, and bismuth become oxychlorides, and the lead and silver chlorides. These are separated in known manner.
