Index type-wheel machines for embossing metal; machines for printing in curved lines; hammer-impression arrangements.-In a machine for impressing characters in the periphery or face of a medal, badge, &c., sliding dies B, Fig. 4, are mounted in a revoluble carrier A which is set by means of an index plate C, and the selected die is depressed for impression by means of a camlever N operated by a hand-lever D and returned by a spring P. The cam-lever may be provided with a roller L engaging a cam part D<1> on the hand-lever Aligning for impression. - The hand-lever D carries pivotally a dog adapted to engage notches C<1> in the index plate C. Matrix-carriages; matrix-clamping arrangements; letter-spacing mechanism.-For receiving impressions on the periphery, the medal R is mounted in a revoluble clamp consisting of pads S<1>, S<2> secured to holders S<3>, S<4>, revoluble in a carriage 9. The shank S<5> of the holder S<4> passes through a threaded sleeve T, which can be turned by a knob T<1> to tighten or release the clamp. Balls T<2> are placed between the shank S<5> and the sleeve T. The clamp is rotated for letter-spacing by means of a ratchet-wheel E, Fig. 2, on the shank S<5>, and a pawl U mounted on a lever V which is arranged in the path of an arm W<1> on the hand-lever D. The lever V is returned by a spring V<2> into contact with an adjustable stop X. The ratchet-wheel is engaged by a spring detent Y, mounted on a pivoted arm which can be lifted to permit of detachment of the ratchet-wheel or the carriage. For receiving impressions on the face, the medal is mounted in a seating on a carriage which can slide on a support and is provided with a rack gearing with a pinion on the shaft of the ratchet-wheel.
