Abstract

165,490. Rudge-Whitworth, Ltd., and Pugh, J. V. Jan. 29, 1020. Detaching from, and attaching to, permanent hubs.-In means for securing and centring an outer hub on an inner hub, the members are each provided with two axially-separated zones of engaging-means having non-radial faces so inclined that axial pressure of one part on the other rigidly centres them and, by causing the engaging-means to bind on opposite faces, induces a torsion which eliminates rotational slackness. The outer hub-part b is forced on to the axle a by a nut &c. screwing on the end e thereof, Figs. 1 and 2, and engages the axle by inner and outer zones of corrugations c, d of taper form, respectively converging on apices c<1>, d'. The recesses c<2>, d<2> of the part b lie in the same radial planes, but the crests c<3>, d<3> of the part a have a small relative angular displacement, so that contact takes place under the axial force of the nut &c. on opposite flangs c<4>, d<4> of the two sets. In a modification, the set d is replaced by small parallel serrations, when correct angular displacement of the set c mav be ensured by a "pilot" key on the parallel portion of either member loosely engaging a groove just prior to contact of the main engaging-faces. In a further modification, the corrugations c are also replaced by a short set of serrations formed on a larger diameter than the outer set, and taking a somewhat helical direction, the angle of the helix preferably exceeding the friction angle. In this case, both sets may be helical, provided that the inclinations are of different degree or opposite sense. In another form, the parts a, b engage by two zones of polygonal cross-section, one or both being tapered, and the inner zone being of larger diameter than the outer. The sets of poly. gonal faces on either part may be angularly displaced, or opposite ends of the faces on either part may be relieved as at k<1>, l<1>, Fig. 9.
