Abstract

163,800. Igranic Electric Co., Ltd., (Cutler-Hammer Manufacturing Co.). Feb. 25, 1920. Switchboards.-In an electric lighting system comprising a dynamo-electric machine coupled to an internal-combustion engine, the machine acting as a starting- motor and as a generator, the switch 22, Fig. 1, for connecting the machine 11 to the battery 9 at starting, a switch 23 for controlling the engine ignition, and the automatic cut-in switch 17 are mounted on a common base 24, Fig. 2, whereby they can be mounted as a whole on a common wiring panel 100. This panel has conducting studs 101, which pass through the base and connect with the switch contacts. The machine 11 acts as a compound-wound motor and as a shunt generator, the series field going out of action during generating. The cutin switch 17 controls the means 21 compensating for the difference in voltage between the generator and the battery when supplying the lamps; these means may comprise a counter cell. The switch 22 when closed also closes the ignition switch, but the latter can be moved independently of the former. Electromagnetic switches; contacts.-The cutin switch comprises shunt and series coils, which oppose each other, if the battery tends to discharge through the machine when driven as a generator. It is attached to the base 24 by a magnetic frame 25 carrying a knife-edge 29 on which the armature 30 pivots; an adjustable retracting spring 32 acts on the armature through a second knife-edge 34. The pole-piece 27 is extended away from the pivot to give increased pull on the armature. This carries a divided copper strip contact 39, Fig. 3, the ends 41-43 being of different lengths; at the side is a heavy copper strip 40, which, with the fixed carbon contact 37, forms arc contacts. A fixed flexible copper contact 46 bears on the contact 39, when the electromagnet is de-energized and acts as the control switch for the compensating device 21. Press-button switches; quick-action switches; interlocked switches.-The starting switch comprises the press button 53, Fig. 5, on a rod 52 carrying a cros-head 69. The cross-head has rollers 67, which deflect the spring blade contacts 60, 61 into engagement with the fixed contact 64, the rollers passing over the bends in the spring blades and being held by stops 72, 73, while the rod 52 moves slightly without carrying the cross-head with it. When the press button is released a spring 76 returns the rod to the " off " position, the cross-head leaving the blades with a quick action. When the button 53 is moved in, it engages a plate 97 which bears on a collar 93 on the ignition switch spindle 83. As the spindle moves in, a contact 85 closes the ignition circuit from the machine to the coil through the spring blade 86. On further movement of the spindle, a collar 89 thereon closes a circuit from the battery to the coil through the contact 92; when the spindle is released, a spring 95 returns the spindle to its intermediate position with the contact 85 retained by the bend in the blade 86. The spindle 83 can be actuated independently of the switch 22.
