Abstract

Two-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, varying clearance of.-Engines with radial, inclined, or other cylinders have pairs of pistons which reciprocate one in the other and compress between them a charge of explosive mixture which is transferred through a valve j to a combustion chamber x. Charges are drawn from the crank casing into the compression space between the pistons c, d through a valve p in the inner piston. The pistons are connected to cranks arranged at 180‹ or a little less than 180‹ apart. The outer piston comprises a head portion of aluminium or other metal having a recess y for housing lubricating oil, and an extension z which is ribbed upon its outer surface and guided in the cylinder by balls 16 or other devices. A ring x<1> for scraping the cylinder is carried by the piston. The exhaust ports h open into a chamber n which increases in crosssection towards the outlet pipe. To vary the clearace space, the cylinder a is adjusted relatively to the crank shaft by screw and nut mechanism 5, 6 actuated by a shaft 13 driven through worm-gearing.
