Abstract

162,670. Mora, B. May 5, 1920, [Convention date]. Type-wheel machines for decoding; key actions. -In apparatus for translating code signs or signals, such as long and short flashes of light, or the waving of flags, into print, and having keys operated in accordance with the code sign or signal to adjust different types, the amount of movement of a type-wheel is determined by the adjustable limitation of depression of one and the same keys operated alternately or in succession. As shown in Fig. 1, three keys are employed, e for the dot, f for the dash, and u for release between each complete signal representing a letter &c. The keys e, f have tappets g, h, which engage one arm of a bell-crank lever b mounted loosely upon the type-wheel shaft. The typewheel a has a ratchet-wheel engaged by a spring- pressed pawl c mounted upon the lever b, a detent z holding the ratchet-wheel after movement. Another pawl i has a pin-and-slot mounting n, p upon the lever b which gives to this pawl a forward and upward movement in step with the key depressions. The downward movement of the keys e, f and consequently the rotation of the type-wheel is limited by pins l, m engaging with projections at different heights in a stop bar k. After each letter combination is completed the release-key u is depressed for impression as described below, and upon its return movement frees the detent z from the ratchet-wheel and also through linkage the detent m<1> from the stop-bar, the type-wheel and stop-bar being spring-returned to normal position. When used for transmission at the same time as recording, the keys may be provided with suitable contacts for making circuit with a battery and lamp. Instead of the keys operating directly upon the stop-bar, they may operate through a power device. Hammer-impression arrangements. - The release-key u upon depression rocks a two-armed lever o to press the paper-strip holder s against the ink-ribbon q and type-wheel.
