Abstract
162,148. Caldwell, J. W. March 3, 1920. Wood-screws; drive-screws.-A single or multithreaded drive or turn-screw has a screwed portion made up of a substantially cylindrical part D and a tapered end part D', the threads on the tapered part increasing in height from the large to the small end. In the double-threaded screw shown, the threads T, T<1> on the conical part D<1> increase in height and decrease in thickness from the thread t<8> to the thread t<2>. The underside of the thread t<2a>, t<8a>, Fig. 2a, is of uniform pitch and constant radius s<1> and is concave or cup shaped, while the upperside of the thread t<2b>, t<8b> has a smaller radius s" and a greater pitch. Instead of being curvilinear in profile, the threads may be straight. The threads are so proportioned that the external diameter at the lower end of the thread is approximately equal to the internal diameter at the upper end of the conical part. With this construction, the thread or threads at the point form incisor edges suitable for rotating the screw when driven by a hammer, and as the screw is entered, the fibres of the wood are gradually compressed. To enable the head H of the screw better to resist a blow, the slot h<4> is formed in two parts, as by suitable milling tools, having a bridge piece h<6> Fig. 5, at the centre. The slots are engaged by a suitable driver R. Specification 21260/99 is referred to.
