Shearing.-In a machine for making wirebound boxes, crates, &c. the feeding mechanism for the work acts continuously, and the mechanism for severing the binding wires between successive groups of box parts acts while the work is being fed. The separate blanks are carried and fed forward by conveyer chains 2, Figs. 1 and 4, carried by sprockets 6, 7 which are adjustable towards one another, the sprocket 6 being continuously driven from a shaft 15 through reduction gear. The links of the chains, which are adjustable laterally, are formed to receive the cleats c of the blanks and carry adjustable spacer blocks 9 for spacing the sections of a blank and for spacing successive blanks. The binding wires, which are drawn by the work from reels, through rollers 13 and under a roller 14, are. severed between one group of box parts and another by cutters 57, 58, Fig. 10, each suspended from brackets 56 on the carriage 27 and riding upon the work in their inoperative position. The knife 57 of each cutter is secured to a lever 59 pivoted in the bracket 56 and is slidably encased by a casing 63 to which the knife 58 is pivoted at 61, Fig. 20, the casing being pivoted by a lever 65 to the bracket 56. The casings are connected by a shaft 74 and the outer casings carry gauges 68 which contact with the advancing block 9 when the cutters have dropped, under the actions of springs 69, into the space between adjacent groups of box parts and the consequent movement of the work relative to the movement of the brackets 56 causes the cutters to pivot about their respective centres 60, 64, thus causing relative movement of the knives 57, 58 to sever the binding wire which has already snapped within the notch 66 of the knife 58 which is controlled by a spring 67.
