Description

(54) MEANS FOR HOLDING A VERTICAL CYLINDER STATIONARY AGAIST ROTATION WHILE STRAND COILS ARE FORMED ON IT (71) We, NEUMijNSTERSCHE MASCHINEN- UND APPARATEBAU GESELLSCHAFT MBH, a body corporate organised under the laws of the German Federal Republic, of D-2350 Neumunster 1, Christianstrasse 160-164, Gereman Federal Republic, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to apparatus for holding a vertical cylinder stationary against rotation while a strand is wound onto it.
Our co-pending Application No.
19392/78 (Serial No. 1 604 764) discloses a method of slowing down the longitudinal travel of a fibre strand. An embodiment of that invention discloses an arrangement whereby a vertical cylinder is prevented from rotation about its vertical axis as herein disclosed without interfering with the removal of windings of the strand from the lower end of the cylinder.
According to the present invention we therefore provide in apparatus comprising a vertcial cylinder, a member rotatable about a vertical axis and having a portion inclined to the vertical serving to guide a strand, drive means to rotate the member, and a swash plate mounted inside the cylinder and movable in synchronism with rotation of the member and provided with fingers engaging in slots in the cylinder, the arrangement being such that the rotation of the member causes the strand to be wound around the cylinder whereupon the fingers engage each turn of strand and move each turn downwards, means for holding the cylinder stationary against rotation while the strand is wound onto it comprising a stationary external ring which is formed with slots in which the fingers engage and which is disposed below the region where the strand leaves the rotatable member.
In order to enable the invention to be more readily understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate diagrammatically and way of example an embodiment thereof, and in which: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through an apparatus for laying a fibre strand into a can; and Figure 2 a partial plan view and partial section of the apparatus on the sectional line shown in Figure 1.
Referring now to the Figures there is shown apparatus for laying a fibre strand into a can (not shown) and in which suction is applied to a strand 1 through an injector nozzle 2 and the strand 1 is delivered into the hollow shaft 3 of a rotatable member 4.
Compressed air for the injector nozzle 2 enters through a bore 5, the injector serving only to start up the apparatus and then being switched off. The rotatable member 4 is driven about its longitudinal vertical axis by a motor 7 through transmission means 6.
The strand 1 passes along a portion of hollow shaft 3 inclined to the vertical, and out of an outlet opening 8 of the rotatable member 4 and is wound around a stationary vertical cylinder 10 which is formed with slots 9 in which engage fingers 11 of a swash plate 12 mounted inside the stationary cylinder 10. The stationary cylinder 10 and the swash plate 12 are mounted on an extension 14 of the hollow shaft 3, the swash plate 12 being mounted by means of ball bearings 13 in such a manner that in the region of the outlet opening 8 the fingers 11 always stand at the top of their motion with their lower surfaces flush with or above the outlet opening 8.
Because of its mounting, the swash plate 12 performs with its fingers 11 an upward and downward movement in the direction of the arrow 15. In order to prevent any rotary movement of the cylinder, the fingers 11 additionally engage in slots 16 in a stationary external ring 17 disposed under the swash plate 12.
The rocking movement of the swash plate 12 is in synchronism with the passing of the strand 1 out of the rotatable member 4, that is to say in the region of the outlet opening 8 the fingers 11 are always at the top of their motion, so that, as illustrated. the strand 1 can be wound on the cylinder 10 between the stationary external ring 17 and the lower surfaces of the fingers 11. The swash plate 12 presses each turn produced downwards until a lowermost turn slides off the end of the cylinder 10 and drops into the can. The outlet opening 8 of the rotatable member 4 is bent over vertically downwards.
WHAT WE CLAM IS: 1. In apparatus comprising a vertical cylinder, a member rotatable about a vertical axis and having a portion inclined to the vertical serving to guide a strand, drive means to rotate the member, and a swash plate mounted inside the cylinder and movable in synchronism with rotation of the member and provided with fingers engaging in slots in the cylinder, the arrangement being such that the rotation of the member causes the strand to be wound around the cylinder whereupon the fingers engage each turn of strand and move each turn downwards, means for holding the cylinder stationary against rotation while the strand is wound onto it comprising a stationary external ring which is formed with slots in which the fingers engage and which is disposed below the region where the strand leaves the rotatable member.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the rotatable member includes a vertical hollow shaft extending longitudinally of the member, and wherein the vertical cylinder and the swash plate are mounted on an extension of the hollow shaft.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the swash plate is mounted in such a manner that in the region where the strand leaves the rotatable member the fingers always stand at the top of their motion with their lower surfaces flush with or above the region.
4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 3, wherein said region is defined by an outlet aperture at the end of a hollow inclined portion of the rotatable member.
5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 4, wherein the outlet aperture of the rotatable member is bent over vertically downwards.

Claims (5)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. is to say in the region of the outlet opening 8 the fingers 11 are always at the top of their motion, so that, as illustrated. the strand 1 can be wound on the cylinder 10 between the stationary external ring 17 and the lower surfaces of the fingers 11. The swash plate 12 presses each turn produced downwards until a lowermost turn slides off the end of the cylinder 10 and drops into the can. The outlet opening 8 of the rotatable member 4 is bent over vertically downwards. WHAT WE CLAM IS:
