Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN MOTOR CYCLES
(71) I, PETER WILLIAM BOTH
WELL, a British subject of "Meoncote" 114
Shipston Road, Stratford Upon Avon, in the
County of Warwickshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a Patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to motor cycles, scooters, mopeds an other like two-wheeled power-driven vehicles (hereinafter referred to generically as motor cycles).
The broad object of the invention is to provide a motor cycle which affords improved protection against injury to the legs and feet of a rider as compared with conventional motor cycle designs.
A particular aim of the invention is to provide a form of footrest for a motor cycle which is less potentially injurious than conventional footrests.
Conventional footrests comprise outwardly projecting members at the respective sides of the cycle. One footrest has an associated control means for the braking system of the cycle and the other footrest has an associated control means for the gear change mechanism, and conventionally these means each comprises a pivotally mounted lever adjacent the relevant footrest. A disadvantage of this conventional arrangement is that the footrests and the levers form projections which may cause injury to a rider's legs and feet in an accident.
According to the invention, I provide a motor cycle having two footrests one of which has associated therewith control means for a braking system of the cycle and the other of which has associated therewith control means for a gear change mechanism of the cycle, wherein each footrest comprises a hollow housing mounted on the motor cycle and formed to provide a support for a rider's foot, the associated control means including at least
one operating member projecting from the housing for engagement by the foot.
A further feature of the invention is con
cerned with leg shields provided on the motor
cycle at respectively opposite sides thereof, i.e. the rearwardly directed faces which are provided in front of the positions to be occupied by a rider's legs so as to protect them against impacts, particularly front impacts.
Such faces may be provided by members secured to the body or frame of the motor cycle or by parts of a rigid structure secured to the body or frame as in my Patent No. 1,547,558 or by parts of a bulkhead which is part of the body or frame as in my Patent No. 1,327,193 and my Patent No. 1,515,663.
In an accident the rider of a motor cycle may suffer injury to his legs as a result of them splaying outwardly beyond the leg shields and hitting, for example, the side of a motor car. Any relative movement then occurring between the cycle and an object hit by a leg may cause the leg to be pulled and the associated hip joint dislocated.
Within the aim of improving the leg protection afforded by the leg shields, according to a further feature of the invention each leg shield is provided at its outer edge with a rearwardly extending, smoothly contoured projection arranged, in use, to restrain movement of a rider's leg outwardly from behind the leg shield.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of one form of motor cycle embodying the invention,
FIGURE 2 is a horizontal section through a part of one of the leg shields, and
FIGURE 3 is a vertical section through one of the footrests.
The motor cycle illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings is generally of the form described and illustrated in the Complete Specification and drawings of my Patent No. 1,515,663.
The motor cycle has a chassis comprising a transverse bulkhead 10 with a forwardly extending section and a rearwardly extending section which are supported, respectively, by a front wheel 11 and a rear wheel 12. The chassis has a fairing 13 enclosing the front section with the handlebars 14 of the front wheel steering head extending through apertures therein. The fairing 13 also carries a wind shield 15. The rear section is enclosed by a padded seat 16 and a fairing 17, and the seat has associated therewith a body 18 which is deformable to absorb some of the energy of a rear impact. The bulkhead 10 has two rearwardly extending spaced plates 19 at opposite sides of an opening therein in which an engine and a gearbox are mounted so as to be supported by the bulkhead and the plates.
The padded seat 16 is supported by the rear section of the chassis and is disposed rearwardly of the bulkhead 10. The seat has a top portion 20, downwardly extending side portions 21 and laterally projecting front portions 22 which are attached to the side portions of the rear face of the bulkhead 10 and provide rearwardly facing leg shields. Formed integrally with each leg shield is a rearwardly extending, smoothly contoured lip 23 which extends along the outer edge of the shield.
The lips 23 are arranged to retain a rider's legs in position behind the leg shields and prevent the legs splaying outwardly, which could cause injury in an accident.
Referring to Figure 2, each leg shield portion 22 and its lip 23 may comprise a shell 24 of a semi-rigid material such as rubber or a suitable plastics filled with a deformable material 25 such as foam plastics. The shell is formed with a slit extending generally parallel to the lip and having its edges provided with interengaged hook formations 26. The rearwardly directed face of the portion 22 including the slit and the inner face of the lip are covered with a soft padding such as foam rubber or pvc nitrile with a leather or sheetplastics covering.
The arrangement is that the lip 23 is substantially non-deformable laterally so that it will retain a rider's leg behind the leg shield if the leg is forced outwardly against the inner face of the lip. The hook formations 26 remain interengaged when a lateral force is exerted on the lip.
However, if the rider's leg is impelled forwardly against the rear, smoothly contoured edge of the lip, the lip is capable of deforming to absorb some of the energy of the impact and thereby prevent injury to the leg. Thus, a forwards force to the lip disengages the hook formations 26 and thereby allows the shell to deform and the deformable filling 25 to be compressed.
The motor cycle is provided with two footrests 27 each comprising a hollow housing 28 generally of triangular shape in section with a foot support portion 29 at the upper apex of the housing. The footrest housings 28 are mounted on the exhaust pipes 30 of the cycle at opposite sides thereof.
Ducting is provided to direct cooling air to the footrests to prevent them becoming hot.
This ducting is provided by forwardly opening ducts in the front fairing 13 which communicate with rearwardly opening slots 31 formed in the bulkhead 10 beneath the leg shields.
The footrest 27 at the left hand side of the motor cycle is provided with two buttons 32 (Figure 3) which project from apertures formed in the respective inclined upper walls of the housing so as to be engageable by the rider pivoting the relevant foot F about the foot support portion 29. The two buttons constitute control means for the gear change mechanism of the motor cycle.
The footrest 27 at the right hand side of the motor cycle (not shown) has a single button projecting from an aperture in the rear inclined upper wall of the housing. This button constitutes control means for the brakes of the motor cycle.
The control buttons are generally cylindrical and axially slidable in circular guides 33 and springs (not shown) are provided to urge them outwardly to their normal positions which are limited by stop formations on the guides. The buttons are arranged to be depressed by the rider's feet to operate the gear change mechanism and the brakes, being returned to their normal positions by the springs when released.
Various means may be provided for trans mitting movement of the buttons to the gear change mechanism and the brakes. Hydraulic systems or mechanical linkages may be used for this purpose. In the case of the gear change mechanism control, as shown in Figure 3 the two buttons 32 may have two plungers 34 which are arranged to act on a rotary indexing plate 35 arranged, when turned in one direction by operation of the appropriate one of the buttons, to change the gear ratio upwardly and, when turned in the opposite direction by the other button, to change the gear ratio downwardly.
The footrest housings are smoothly contoured and have no projecting parts, the means for transmitting movement from the buttons to the gear change mechanism and the brakes being connected to the buttons within the housings, so that the risk of injury to the legs and feet of the rider is minimised.
