Description

(54) ADVERTISING DISPLAY APPARATUS (71) We, W. H. BOSSONS (SALES) LIM ITED, a British Company, of Brook Mills, Congleton, Cheshire CW12 1DQ, England, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed. to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to advertising display apparatus formed from a continuous piece of card or like material and a method of supporting such material on such apparatus. In particular the invention relates to easel-type display apparatus capable of supporting a wall plaque for display purposes.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided apparatus for supporting advertising display material and formed from a continuous sheet of material, the sheet having fold lines running across its width to define three or more panels, three of the panels being arranged to form substantially a triangular prism, one of the three panels forming a base of the apparatus, a second of the three panels forming a display member inclined to the base and for supporting said display material, and the third of the three panels forming a support member for the display member and having at least one flap folded at an angle thereto and extending from the base to the display member, the flap having opposite edges respectively bearing on the base and the support member whereby the support member is provided with resistance to flexing, and the apparatus having a ledge in the region of contact of the display member and base for supporting the bottom of an article to be displayed, the ledge rising from said region at an angle to the display member.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of supporting advertising display material comprising resting said display material against a display member of display apparatus having a substantially horizontal base and being formed from a continuous sheet of material, the sheet having fold lines running across its width to define three or more panels, three of the panels being arranged to form substantially a triangular prism. one of the three panels forming the base of the apparatus, a second of the three panels forming the display member which is inclined to the base, and the third of the three panels forming a support member for the display member and having at least one flap folded at an angle thereto and extending from the base to the display member, the flap having opposite edges respectively bearing on the base and the support member whereby the support member is provided with resistance to flexing, the apparatus having a ledge in the region of contact of the display member and the base. the ledge rising from said region at an angle to the display member, the method further comprising supporting the display material on the ledge.
The display apparatus of the invention is of a simple construction and yet is sufficient sturdy to support the weight of a wall plaque, e.g. of porcelain or plaster, for display purposes. The apparatus may be made of cardboard, or similar paper-like material, plastics material, or metal sheet. If the support member did not possess such a flap or flaps the weight of a wall plaque could be sufficient to bend the support member or cause it to fold. There are preferably two flaps folded from the support member to provide the support member with a square C or U-shaped cross-section so that the support member acts as a beam.
In one embodiment of the invention the display apparatus is formed from a cardboard blank in which the base is attached to one end of the display member and the opposite end of the display member is attached to the support member. The points of attachment are provided with score-line or creases so the apparatus may be readily assembled. The end of the support member intended to engage the base may be provided with a tab to be inserted in a slit in the base to secure the supporting member in position.
In a preferred embodiment the display apparatus is provided with a ledge or shelf in the region of contact of the display member and base to retain the plaque in position. The ledge may be formed by extending the base beyond the display member and folding back the card e.g., to form a prism of triangular cross-section on the extended portion of the base.
The invention will now be further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: : Figure I represents a perspective view of a display apparatus in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 represents a blank for contructing the apparatus of Figure 1.
The display apparatus comprises a base 2, display member 4. support member 6 and shelf or ledge 8. The support member is provided with two flaps 10 each having an edge 12 which bears against the display member and an edge 14 which bears against the base. In order to retain the support member in the correct position a tab 16 is provided which projects through a slit 18 (Figure 2) in the base.
The shelf 8 is formed by folding portions 20 and 22. The shelf and the display member may be conveniently secured in place by the tab 24, cut out of the display member, which is inserted through slot 26 in the base (Figure 2).
The blank for forming the apparatus is illustrated in Figure 2 in which the dashed lines represent the lines of fold.

Claims (8)

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. Apparatus for supporting advertising display material and formed from a continuous sheet of material, the sheet having fold lines running across its width to define three or more panels, three of the panels being arranged to form substantially a triangular prism, one of the three panels forming a base of the apparatus, a second of the three panels forming a display member inclined to the base and for supporting said display material, and the third of the three panels forming a support member for the display member and having at least one flap folded at an angle thereto and extending from the base to the display member, the flap having opposite edges respectively bearing on the base and the support member whereby the support member is provided with resistance to flexing. and the apparatus having a ledge in the region of contact of the display member and base for supporting the bottom of an article to be displayed, the ledge rising from said region at an angle to the display member.
2. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 in which the support member is provided with two such flaps.
3. Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the support member is attached to the top of the display member.
4. Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim in which the support member is provided with a tab which engages in a slot in the base.
5. Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim in which the fold lines running across the width of the sheet are parallel.
6. Advertising display apparatus substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. A method of supporting advertising display material comprising resting said display material against a display member of display apparatus having a substantially horizontal base and being formed from a continuous sheet of material, the sheet having fold lines running across its width to define three or more panels, three of the panels being arranged to form substantially a trinangular prism one of the three panels forming the base of the apparatus, a second of the three panels forming the display member which is inclined to the base, and the third of the three panels forming a support member for the display member and having at least one flap folded at an angle thereto and extending from the base to the display member, the flap having opposite edges respectively bearing on the base and the support member whereby the support member is provided with resistance to flexing, the apparatus having a ledge in the region of contact of the display member and the base, the ledge rising from said region at an angle to the display member, the method further comprising supporting the display material on the ledge.
