(54) HINGED LID PACKETS (71) We, MOLINS LIMITED, a British Company, of 2, Evelyn Street, Deptford, London SE8 5DH, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to hinged lid packets for containing rod-like articles, in particular cigarettes.

In British Patent No. 1,570,525 there is disclosed and claimed a hinged lid packet with a lid portion hinged to a body portion, the body portion comprising a front wall, a rear wall, a pair of side walls each formed by an inner flap extending from the rear wall and by an outer flap extending from the front wall, a panel extending upwardly from the front wall, a pair of side flaps extending from the sides of the panel, and means securing each side flap to a respective adjacent inner and/or outer flap; the lid portion comprising a front wall, a rear wall hinged to the rear wall of the body portion, and a pair of side walls each formed by an inner flap extending from the rear wall of the lid portion and by an outerflap extending from the front wall of the lid portion wherein the top of each said side flap is of such a configuration that on completing the formation of the packet, with the lid portion closed, the respective inner and outer flaps of the lid portion may be secured together without intervention of said side flaps.

According to the present invention there is provided a hinged lid packet as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 of British Patent No. 1,570,525, in which said panel is of single thickness and is integral and coplanar with the front wall of the body portion, and in which each side flap extending from said panel is likewise integral and coplanar with the respective outer flap of the body portion, the corners between the front wall and the outer flaps of the body portion being substantially of the full height of the packet.

The invention also extends to a one-piece blank for forming such a hinged lid packet.

It is to be understood throughout this specification that expressions such as "upwardly", "horizontal" etc., whether referring to the packet or to the blank, are to be construed in relation to the packet when standing in an upright position.

A hinged lid packet and a blank according to the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the packet standing upright; and Figure 2 shows the blank from which the packet of Figure 1 is made.

The hinged lid packet shown in Figure 1 is made from the one-piece cardboard blank of Figure 2, and comprises essentially a lid L integrally hinged along a line H to a body B.

The lid L includes a rear wall 10, a front wall 12, and a reinforcing panel 13 secured to the inside of the wall 12. Inner flaps 14 and outer flaps 15 extend from each side of the rear wall 10 and front wall 12 respectively, and are secured together to form the side walls of the lid. A further flap 16 extends from each inner flap 14 and is secured to the inside of the top panel 11.

The body B includes a rear wall 20, a base 21, and a front wall 22. Inner and outer flaps 23 and 24 extend from the rear wall 20 and front wall 22 respectively, and are secured together in the erect packet to form the side walls of the body. A flap 25 extends from each inner flap 23 and is secured to the inside of the base 21.

The top of the front wall 22 is provided with a conventional cut-out 30 to facilitate access to the cigarettes (not shown) in the packet. At the top of each outer flap 24 there is a cut-away part 32, consisting of a section which slopes downwardly from the top of the front wall 22, and a horizontal section which extends to the edge of the outer flap remote from the front wall. Each cut away part 32 is arranged to be of a shape complementary to that of the associated inner flap 14 of the lid, so that when the lid is closed the edges of the inner flap 14 are substantially contiguous with the top edges of the outer flap 24. This allows each outer flap 15 of the lid to be adhesively secured to the associated inner flap 14 with the lid closed, in the manner described in the above-mentioned application No. 10324/76.

Preferably the distance between the two score lines which separate the rear wall 10 of the lid from the two inner flaps 14, is slightly greater than that between the score lines of the rear wall 20 of the body. (This is not shown in Figure 2). This brings the flaps 14 out into the planes of the outer flaps 24 of the body in the erect packet, facilitating adhesion between the flaps 14 and 15.

In contrast to the packet disclosed in the above-mentioned application, the upper part of the body B which takes the place of the inner frame, is in alignment with the lower part of the body, so that the lid when closed will not be quite flush with the lower part. However this enables the packet to be made from a simpler (and hence cheaper) blank, and the machine for forming the packet may also .be somewhat simplified.

WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A hinged lid packet as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 of British Patent No.

1,570,525, in which said panel is of single thickness and is integral and coplanar with the front wall of the body portion, and in which each side flap extending from said panel is likewise integral and coplanar with the respective outer flap of the body portion, the corners between the front wall and the outer flaps of the body portion being substantially of the full height of the packet.

2. A hinged lid packet as claimed in claim 1 in which the rear wall of the lid portion is slightly wider than the rear wall of the body portion, so that the inner flaps of the lid portions are in substantially the same plane as the outer flaps of the body portion.
