Description

(54) HAND BRUSH (71) I, RICHARD CARTER, of Thorneycroft, Monkey Island Lane, Bray, Berkshire, a British subject, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to hand brushes, that is, brushes having a body in which the bristles are mounted and which can be held in the hand.
When the body of a brush was made of wood, it was usual for the body to be rectangular and for the sides of the body to be grooved to form a grip so that the user could hold the brush tightly with thumb and fingertips.
The use of plastics mouldings enabled more complicated shapes to be used for the brush body. For example, the body could be formed with a loop through which the user could pass his fingers to hold the brush.
According to the present invention there is provided a hand brush comprising a brush body which is shaped as a hollow body with an open end defined by a wall knurled on its exterior surface, the bristles being formed on the exterior of the end of the body opposite to the open end.
An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diametral section through a brush; Figure 2 is a plan view of the brush of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an underplan view of the brush of Figure 1.
The brush body shown in the drawings is moulded from plastics material as a hollow cylinder with its top end 11 open and lower end closed bv a wall 12. The lower end wall 12 is moulded with a uniform array of spikes 13 extending away from the open end 11 of the cylinder, the spikes 13 being moulded of the same material as the remainder of the body.
The upstanding cylindrical wall 14 of the cylinder is itself hollow, having a smooth interior portion 15 defining the mouth of the open end 11 of the brush body and an exterior portion 16 which is knurled on the outside by ridges running parallel to the spikes 13 to provide a gripping surface for the brush. A smooth portion 17 joins the interior and exterior portions around the mouth of the open end of the brush body, but the wall is open at 18 around the lower end wall of the body with the spikes moulded thereon. This construction facilitates moulding. The lower edge 19 of the exterior portion is level with the outer surfaces of the lower end wall 12, but the spikes 13 extend below this level.
I have found that the proportions of the brush as shown in the drawings are the most convenient for use as a hand brush, the cylindrical wall 14 being about one centimeter high and the spikes 13 about 3 mm long. The brush can be used for raising the nap of the material covering the handle of a tennis racket, in order to improve the grip of its user.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:- 1. A hand brush comprising a brush body which is shaped as a hollow body with an open end defined by a wall knurled on its exterior surface, the bristles being formed on the exterior of the end of the body opposite to the open end.
2. A hand brush as claimed in claim 1 wherein the knurled wall is formed with ridges running parallel to said bristles.
3. A hand brush as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said wall is itself hollow, having an open end adjacent said bristles and a closed end adjacent the open end of the hollow body.
4. A hand brush as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the bristles are moulded from the same material as the brush body.
5. A hand brush substantially as herein
