Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO A HOSE JOINT (71) We, INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA, an Italian Company of Centro Pirelli, Piazza Duca d'Aosta No 2, 20100 Milan Italy, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to hose joint and a method for joining hoses, including pipes, formed from elastomers. Hoses and pipes of this kind are commonly used for hydraulic and sanitary installations.
A large number of branch pipes, Yshaped connections, and other types of joints are required in building constructions to interconnect hoses and pipes; it could be said that the problem of joints is the most critical, the most important and even the most expensive to be solved in a hose or pipework system. The usual metal tubes are joined in many different manners. Welding is carried out according to various systems and, as it is known, there is a wide range of fittings and joints.
The jointing systems applicable to metallic pipes or in general rigid tubes are not suitable, as such, for flexible and bendable hoses of the above indicated type i.e. formed of elastomer and in particular cured elastomers. Threaded joints are not appropriate, unless suitable fittings are previously applied, and this involves for instance seaming operations or the use of adhesives.
The joint should last at least as long as the jointed hoses and be vertically indestructible. Moreover, owing to the particular nature of the hoses to be connected, the joint will not always have the feature of being separable as in the case of a threaded male/female type joint, but said feature can be omitted owing to the simple structure of the joint according to the present invention and to its method of construction, as will be described herebelow. Therefore, instead of disassembling parts of a joint when it is required to separate two hoses, it is acceptable to remove the old joint and to insert a new one.
In accordance with the present invention a method for constructing a joint between two hoses, as hereinafter defined, of elastomeric material comprises inserting a tubular joint element into the ends of the two hoses to be joined, positioning said hose ends and joint element in a two-part mould with the facing ends of said hoses in the required relative position in the joint, closing the two parts of the mould, and injecting into the mould a polyolefinic material in hot state to surround said joint element and interconnect the hose ends.
Reference herein to hose includes both flexible and non-flexible pipes whether reinforced or not.
Particularly suitable materials for the hose include cured ethylene propylene monomer and/or ethylene-propylene diene monomer.
A method for constructing a joint between two hoses of elastomeric material comprises the steps of inserting a tubular element, constituting a part of the joint, into the end of each hose to be joined, positioning the ends of the hoses to be joined in a two part mould with the facing ends of said hoses being arranged in the required final facing position, closing the two parts of the mould, and injecting into the mould a polyolefinic material in hot state.
The tubular element inserted into the end of each hose may be made of a rigid material and is represented by a single body for all the hoses to be joined in order to better establish the respective positions of the various parts of the joint.
The details of the method for constructing the joint are now given. The ends of a tubular element are inserted in the ends of the two hoses to be joined, with the facing ends of the hoses in the required final portions. The unit so-obtained is then placed in a mould, constituted by two halfmoulds, and provided with an injection device through which is injected the polyolefinic material to surround the tubular element and interconnect the hose ends.
The rigid tubular piece inserted in the ends of the hoses to be joined has, in its portion directed towards the outside of the hose into which it is inserted, a reduced diameter therefore, a hollow space is created between said rigid element and the surface of the inner walls of the hose so that, during injection, the polyolefinic material fills said hollow space and surrounds at the same time the whole terminal surface of the hose.
Also the mould and the injection device may have a small overall size and a light weight and be therefore portable.
Further, it is preferable that the mould containing the hose ends is provided with a vent in order to assist in ensuring a good penetration of the polyolefinic material.
Examples of the polyolefinic material suitable to form the above described joints include Moplen (Trade Mark of a product sold by Montedison), copolymers formed by polypropylene and other olefines (Moplen EP) and in general all the material which, as mentioned above, are compatible with the elastomeric material forming the flexible and bendable hoses taken into consideration.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A method for constructing a joint between two hoses, as hereinbefore defined, of elastomeric material coynprising inserting a tubular joint element into the ends of the two hoses to be joined, positioning said hose ends and joint element in a two-part mould with the facing ends of said hoses in the required final relative position in the joint, closing the two parts of the mould, and injecting into the mould a poly-olefinic material in hot state to surround said joint element and interconnect the hose ends.
2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the tubular joint element has a reduced diameter in a position thereof lying towards a hose end into which it is inserted.
3. A method as in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the tubular joint element forming a portion of the joint and which is inserted into the end of each hose to be joined is a tubular rigid core.
4. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein there is used for the elastomeric material of the hose cured ethylene-propylene monomer.
5. A method according to any one of claims I to 3 wherein there is used for the elastomeric material of the hose cured ethylene propylene diene monomer.
6. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein there is used for the elastomeric material of the hose a combination of cured ethylene-propylene and cured ethylene-propylene diene monomer.
7. A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein use is made of a joint element of polyolefinic material.
8. A method for constructing a joint between a hose of elastomeric material and a joint element of polyolefinic material substantially as hereinbefore described.
9. A joint constructed by a method according to any one of the preceding
