Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO DRAWER
MOUNTING ARRANGEMENTS
(71) We, L.B. (PLASTICS) LIMITED, a
British Company, of Firs Works, Nether
Heage, Belper, Derby, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The invention relates to a drawer mounting arrangements.
It is known to construct drawers from extruded plastics wall panels interconnected at right angles to one another by corner pieces, longitudinal channels or recesses being formed in the side wall panels for sliding engagement with drawer runners mounted in a cabinet or other housing in which the drawer is to be supported in use.
Although plastic drawer constructions of this kind may be directly mounted on plastic or wooden drawer runners, where heavier loads require to be carried metal runner assemblies consisting of pairs of angle section members may be provided, one member of each pair being fitted in the recess in one side of the drawer and the other member being mounted in the cabinet and engaging the member fitted to the drawer by means of rollers, slides or similar supports carried by the respective members. Difficulties arise in fitting metal components of this kind to the drawers themselves in that the construction of the drawer wall panels is generally such that rivets or the like cannot be satisfactorily used and moreover these could interfere with sliding movement. It is also desirable, if possible, to provide for removal of the component in the event of incorrect fitting and it is an object of the present invention to provide a drawer mounting member which meets these requirements.
The invention provides a drawer mounting member adapted to be fitted in a runner recess in a drawer side and comprising an elongated member of L-shape in cross-section having a mounting flange which in use lies flush with the back of the runner recess and a supporting flange extending at right angles to the mounting flange, the runner incorporating projections at longitudinally spaced locations extending beyond the opposite longitudinal edges of the mounting flange and adapted to retain the mounting member against lateral withdrawal from the runner recess when the mounting member is located therein without requiring additional operations or the use of special tools.
Preferably the projections are provided on securing members attached to the mounting flange by spot welding. The number of securing members provided and the number and location of the projections thereon may be varied substantially in accordance with different requirements.
The projections preferably comprise barbs or teeth adapted to bite into the material of the runner recess when the mounting member is pressed into position therein. At least the barbs or teeth which are uppermost in use are preferably inclined slightly towards the supporting flange.
Generally, the mounting member will be fitted with a guide, roller or other friction reducing member for engagement with a complementary runner member mounted in a cabinet or housing in which a drawer fitted with the mounting member is to be located in use, the mounting member and runner member together constituting a runner assembly.
Preferably the securing members are attached to the outer surface of the mounting flange so as to be hidden from view when the mounting member is located in position in the runner recess of the drawer. The invention also provides a drawer fitted with a pair of mounting members according to any of the five immediately preceding paragraphs.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a runner mounting member according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the mounting member Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged rear and end views of a securing member forming part of the mounting member; and
Fig. 5 is an end view of a drawer side wall panel showing a mounting member in the course of being fitted thereto.
The mounting member comprises an elongated metal component of L-shape in crosssection having an upright mounting flange 5 dimensioned to form a close fit within a runner recess 6 in a drawer side 7 so as to lie flush against the back 6A of the recess in use, and a supporting flange 8 disposed at right angles to the mounting flange and adapted in use to lie flush with the upper surface 6B of the runner recess 7 and to be engaged by a roller (not shown) carried by a complementary runner member mounted in a cabinet or the like in which the drawer is to be slidably mounted in use. A slide block 9 is mounted at one end of the mounting member and incorporates a through passage 9A adapted to slidingly receive an outwardly directed flange on the associated runner member. The mounting member and the runner member together form a runner assembly.
A pair of spaced securing members 10 are attached to the rear face of the mounting flange 5 by spot welding and are provided with projecting barbs or teeth 11 which extend above and below the flange. In the illustrated embodiment two downwardly projecting teeth and five upwardly projecting teeth are provided. The upwardly projecting teeth are inclined slightly inwardly, that is over the supporting flange 8 at an angle of 10"--20" and preferably about 15". The arrangement is such that when the mounting member is placed in a drawer recess and pushed home in the manner shown in Fig. 5, the teeth 11 bite into the material of the drawer recess at the upper and lower corners thereof and retain the mounting member in position in the recess.Where the drawer is constructed of plastics material the resilience of the wall panel together with its ability to flex about the recess 6, enables the mounting member to be pulled clear of the recess in the event of incorrect fitting and re-positioned in the correct location.
It will be appreciated that the mounting member is of extremely simple construction and may be manufactured very cheaply since it comprises a simple angle section metal member to which the securing members are attached by welding. It is not necessary to provide holes, raised teeth or other projections on the mounting member other than holes for location of the slide block 9 or like component. The securing members are so positioned that when the mounting member is fitted in the runner recess the securing members are not visible and the drawer therefore presents an attractive out wi appearance. Moreover the mounting member may be easily fitted to the drawer without requiring the use of any tools and can be removed from plastic drawers of the kind referred to above by flexing the drawer wall panel.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the invention. For example the number and spacing of the securing members may be varied as required and the number and arrangement of projecting barbs or teeth on each securing member may be altered. The nature and position of the slide block may be varied or the member may be fitted with a roller or rollers.
While reference has been made herein to mounting of the member on a drawer of extruded plastics construction, it should be appreciated that the invention may also be used in association with drawers of wooden or other construction.
