Description

(54) SCAFFOLDING CLAMP (71) We, PRESS COMPONENTS LiMITED, a British Company of Green Lane, Walsall WS2 8JH, England, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to a scaffolding tube with a clamp for detachably securing a second tube to said first tube at right angles to one another.
There are many types of scaffolding clamps in existence for this purpose. One of the most common is a double clamp with a pair of mutually perpendicularly hingable caps or cover which are clampable to the respective tubes by bolts. Whilst these are perfectly satisfactory for general use, there are certain applications, particularly for securing putlogs, which are normally horizontal in use, where their use is somewhat expensive in that the clamping portion to the putlog itself is always in the same place, namely adjacent to one end of the putlog.
There are therefore many putlog clamps which are simplified to provide this simple function. Most of these are quite satisfactory in use but they are detachable from the putlog and therefore involve work in assembly thereon before the putlog can be placed in any scaffolding structure being built.
It is the object of this invention to provide a putlog or equivalent tube with a clamp of simple construction and which is not subject to the disadvantage that the workman must assemble it to the putlog before the latter can be incorporated into any structure.
According to the invention, there is provided a tube with a scaffolding clamp adjacent to one end thereof comprising a hingeable jaw, a fixed part of the hinge of which is secured to the tube and a headed bolt passing through a hole in the tube at a position spaced from said fixed part to engage the free end of the jaw, the bolt head being inside the tube and the bolt and hole being formed to interengage to prevent relative rotation therebetween as a nut is tightened on the bolt in use, to clamp a further tube between the jaw and said tube.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a perspective view showing a tube with a scaffolding clamp constructed in accordance with the invention.
The drawing shows a clamp for a putlog or equivalent tube. The putlog is identified by numeral 10 and is circular section scaffolding tube. Near one end thereof there is welded a hinge fixed part 11. This is a channel shaped member with two upstanding parallel lugs through which a hinged pin 12 passes. The hinge pin carries a jaw 13 of conventional type with part circular cut outs to accept a tube which is to be fixed at right angles to the putlog tube 10.
At its free end remote from the hinge the iaw 13 has a slot 14 to accept a bolt 15.
The bolt is provided with a head 16 adjacent to which is a square section portion 17. Such a bolt is usually referred to as a coach bolt. The end of the bolt remote from the head 16 and portion 17 is screw threaded to accept a nut 18. Between the nut 18 and the jaw 13 a washer 19 is used.
The bolt 15 passes through an oblong hole 20 in the tube 10 near the said end and at a position between that end and the fixed part 11 of the hinge of the cover. The oblong hole has parallel sides of a width to accept the portion 17 of the bolt without allowing relative rotation of the bolt within the hole 20. To clamp a tube at right angles to the putlog tube 10 such tube is engaged under the jaw either by sliding it through endwise or more usually by swelling the bolt 15 so that it disengages from the slot 14 in the jaw 13. When the tube to be clamped is engaged in the cut outs in the jaw 13 the bolt is brought again into the position shown and the nut 18 tightened.
The square portion 17 engaging in the oblong hole 20 prevents rotation of the bolt relatively to the tube 10. Release of the tube can be accomplished by the loosening of the bolt by unscrewing the nut 18, until either the tube can be removed endwise or alternatively the bolt can again be swivelled to release from the slot 14 whereupon the jaw 13 can be swivelled about its hinge 12.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A tube with a scaffolding clamp adjacent to one end thereof comprising a hingeable jaw, a fixed part of the hinge of which is secured to the tube and a headed bolt passing through a hole in the tube at a position spaced from said fixed part to engage the free end of the jaw, the bolt head being inside the tube and the bolt and hole being formed to interengage to prevent relative rotation therebetween as a nut is tightened on the bolt in use, to clamp a further tube between the jaw and said tube.
2. A tube with a scaffolding clamp as claimed in claim 1 in which the fixed part of the hinge is welded to the tube.
3. A tube with a scaffolding clamp as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which the hole for the bolt is situated between the fixed part of the hinge and the adjacent end of the tube.
4. A tube with a scaffolding clamp as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the headed bolt has a non-circular portion adjacent to the head and this is non-rotatably engageable in the hole which is also non-circular.
5. A tube with a scaffolding clamp as claimed in claim 4 in which the non-circular portion adjacent to the bolt head is square and the hole is a parallel sided elongated slot.
6. A tube with a scaffolding clamp substantially as- hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.

Claims (6)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. either the tube can be removed endwise or alternatively the bolt can again be swivelled to release from the slot 14 whereupon the jaw 13 can be swivelled about its hinge 12.
