Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO CLOSURES FOR BOTTLES (71) 1, FREDERICK WILLIAM GEGGUS, a British Subject, tla Diamond Products, of, Manor Way, London, E.16, do hereby declare the invention, of which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to closures for bottles and its object is to provide a bottle closure which, on being reversed, constitutes a dispenser for the contents of the bottle.
The invention is particulary concerned with closures for bottles which contain a liquid, such as distilled water, which is required to be injected in relatively small quantities into relatively small apertures such as the filler openings of a vehicle battery. Such bottles are usually provided with a small dispensing opening, and a separate length of tube, one end of which is fitted over the dispensing opening, after removal of the stopper, when the contents of the bottle are to be dispensed.
Without the provision of a length of tube, which is easily mislaid because it is not permanently attached to the bottle, it is difficult to inject the contents accurately into a small aperture and consequently liquid is not only wasted, but splashes onto the area around th efiller opening.
The present invention accordingly provides a combined closure cap and dispenser which is moulded from resilient synthetic plastics material and comprises a central open-ended dispensing tube, a sleeve surrounding one end of the dispensing tube and adapted to be inserted, at either end, in the mouth of a bottle, a collar surrounding the central portion of the sleeve and adapted to fit, from either end, over the mouth of a bottle, and a cap connected to said collar and adapted to close the adjacent ends of said tube and said sleeve.
One embodiment of the invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows, partly in elevation and partly in section, a combined closure and dispenser in accordance with the invention; and Figures 2 and 3 show the top of a plastics bottle containing distilled water for topping up vehicle batteries, with the device of Fig. 1 in its closing and dispensing positions respectively.
The device illustrated is preferably produced by injection moulding from polyethylene or other suitable resilient synthetic plastics material and has a central elongated tube 1 which tapers towards one end. Surrounding the end of the tube l remote from its tapered end is a sleeve 2 which is connected to the tube by a central web 3 dividing the sleeve into two annular plug portions 4 and 5 adapted to enter and fit the mouth of a bottle. A collar 6 surrounds the central portion of the sleeve 2 and is connected thereto by a central web 7 in radial alignment with the web 3.
The web 7 divides the collar 6 into two axially aligned skirt portions 8 and 9 which are adapted to fit over the mouth of a bottle. A strip 10 extends from the skirt portion 8 of the collar 6 and is provided, at its outer end, with a cap 11 adapted to be applied to the outer end of the plug portion 4 of the sleeve 2 and provided with a stopper 12 which is adapted to enter and fit the adjacent end of the tube 1.
When the device is employed to close a bottle 13 (Fig. 2) it is applied to t he mouth thereof with the tapered end of the tube 1 entering the bottle neck 14 which is gripped at its upper end between the plug portion 5 of the sleeve 2 and the skirt portion 9 of the collar 6. The removable cap 11 and its stopper 12 can then be applied to the upper ends of the sleeve 2 and tube 1 respectively.
To dispense liquid from the bottle, the device is removed, inverted and re-applied to the bottle, as shown in Fig. 3, with the cap 11 open and the neck 14 of the bottle gripped between the plug portion 4 of the sleeve 2 and the skirt portion 8 of the collar 6.

Claims (11)

WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A combined closure and dispensing device for bottles, said device being moulded from resilient plastics material and comprising a central open-ended dispensing tube, a sleeve surrounding one end of the dispensing tube and adapted to be inserted, at either end, in the mouth of a bottle, a collar surrounding the central portion of the sleeve and adapted to fit, from either end, over the mouth of a bottle, and a cap connected to said collar and adapted to close the adjacent ends of said tube and said sleeve.
2. A device according to Claim 1, produced by injection moulding from polyethylene.
3. A device according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein said central tube tapers towards its end remote from said sleeve.
4. A device according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, wherein said sleeve is connected to said tube by a central radial web which divides the sleeve into two axially aligned annular plug portions of equal diameter.
5. A device according to any preceding claim, wherein said collar is connected to said sleeve by a central radial web which divides the collar into two axially aligned skirt portions of equal diameter.
6. A device according to Claims 4 and 5, wherein said webs are radially aligned with each other.
7. A device according to any preceding claim, wherein said cap is formed integral with one end of a connecting strip, the other end of which is integral with the end of said collar remote from said tube.
8. A device according to any preceding claim, wherein said cap comprises a flange portion adapted to close the end of said sleeve and a stopper portion adapted to enter the end of said tube surrounded by said sleeve.
9. A device according to any preceding claim for application to the mouth of a bottle, said device being reversible between a closed position in which the dispensing tube enters the bottle and the cap is applied to the sleeve and a dispensing position in which the dispensing tube projects from the mouth of the bottle.
10. A combined closure and dispensing device for bottles, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
11. A bottle provided with a combined closure and dispensing device, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the accompanying draw ings.
