Description
(54) CLOSURE AND COUPLING CAPS MADE OF PLASTICS
MATERIAL FOR THE ENDS OF STEEL TUBES WHICH
ARE TO BE COATED WITH THERMOPLASTICS
(71) We, MANNESMANN AKTIENGESELL
SCHAFT, a joint stock company of Germany, of 4 Dusseldorf 1, Mannesmannufer 2,
Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to closure caps preferably made of a plastics material for the ends of steel tubes which are to be coated with thermoplastics material.The closure caps are intended to provide protection against soiling and corrosion of the internal tube surface during the coating of individual tubes and also to act as coupling elements for the tube ends which are brought together to form a line of tubing or piping, each cap having a projection engagable in a correspondingly constructed recess of a neighbouring cap, and having apertures for venting the tubes.
German Patent Nos. 1575207 and 2523020, disclose caps with which a coupling can be formed which is suitable for uniting steel tubes together to form a line of tubing which can be taken continuously through the head of an extruder for the purpose of coating with a layer of thermoplastics material. The coupling comprises two differently shaped plastics material caps which can be placed on the tube ends, one of which comprising a cupshaped recess in which there engages a correspondingly shaped projection on-the other cap. The caps of German Patent No. 2523020 comprise at their internal side, an annular projection which engages the internal surface of the tube ends and which ensures that the caps have a secure seating on the tube ends.
In the bases of the caps there are provided apertures for venting the tubes.
We have sought to provide an improvement in known plastics material caps to make it possible to protect the interior of the steel tubes, between the production stage of the tubes and the time they are coated, against corrosion and soiling, particularly against the action of moisture and the penetration of blasting grit when the tube surface is blasted before coating. We have also sought to make it possible for the interior of the steel tubes to be sealed at the time of coating so as to maintain a vacuum produced in a shown manner between the coating and tube for the purpose of producing a sealing-tight application of the tubular coating against the external surface of the tube.Finally, we have sought to ensure that the tubes remain protected against soiling, the penetration of moisture and resulting corrosion even after they have been coated, for example, whilst they are being stored.
Accordingly the present invention provides a closure cap for a tube end which comprises a projection and/or recess adapted to engage in a correspondingly shaped projection and/or recess of another cap, and having a base which is provided on the side towards the tube interior with an inhibitor substance to provide the internal surfaces of the tube with protection against corrosion.
Preferably, the base has an aperture for venting the tube which is formed by partially pressing out a portion of the base, which portion then forms an obliquely positioned cover for the aperture.
Preferably, the caps is made of a polyamide, whose water content when placed on the tube end is greater than the equilibrium valve which obtains under ambient conditions of 20"C and 65% relative humidity.
The invention is further illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 shows a coupling of two tubes with two differently shaped caps;
Figures 2 to 4 each show a coupling cap with set-back bases;
Figs. 5 to 7 show two identical coupling caps in engagement with differently shaped projections.
As shown in Figure 1, closure and coupling caps 3 and 4 are fitted over tube ends 1 and 2.
Bases 5 and 6 respectively of caps 3 and 4 have apertures 7 for venting the tubes. The base 5 of cap 3 is set back into the tube, whilst the base 6 of cap 4 is constructed in the form of a projection 8 which engages in the recess of cap 3. On the internal side of each cap base, an inhibitor substance in the form of tablets 9 is located within a screen-like case 10.
Conveniently, the inhibitor substance is composed of two components one of which has a vapour pressure sufficient for protection at room temperature and the other is volatile at temperatures between 100 and 200"C. The intention of this is to provide protection against corrosion for the internal surface of the tube during storage before further processing. Heating which is carried out during further processing, causes the inhibitor component having the relatively low vapour pressure to volatilise and when the tube is cooled, it condenses on the internal wall thereof. As a result, an additional inhibiting effect is obtained with substances which are not very volatile at ambient temperature.
The diameter of the apertures 7 is approximately 1 to 2% of the internal tube diameter, thus providing the possibility of removing substances, such as water and oil, which may be situated in the interior of the tube, and which evaporate when subjected to the heating which is carried out during further processing, without substantially affecting the vacuum between external tube surface and extruder head which is necessary for the proper carrying out of the coating process.
For the efficient removal of vapours, it is advantageous to provide as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, a sufficiently large crosssection between each two neighbouring caps for the passage of vapours from one tube to the other. As shown in Figure 2, tongue-like surfaces 11 which project from the bases of the caps and which cover the apertures obliquely, are provided to protect the apertures 7 against the entry of dirt or moisture, such as driving rain whilst the tubes are being stored. When the tubes are being stored and during pre-treatment such as sand blasting of the tubes before coating, it is advisable to keep the apertures 7 closed and only to open them just before coating.For this purpose, as Figure 2 shows, it is proposed that the surfaces 11 engage with thin webs 12 with a sealing action over the apertures 7, or as shown in Figures 3 and 4, that the surfaces 11 are situated in the opening plane and are held therein by a reduced wall portion 13 of the cap base 5. These webs or reduced wall portions are pierced directly before coating thereby freeing the apertures.
As shown in Figure 5 in longitudinal section and in plan view in Figure 6, the tube ends I and 2 can be coupled by arranging that each of the caps 3 and 4 comprise, in an identically shaped arrangement, a projection 14 and a corresponding recess 15, these being formed by partial bulges in the bases.
In this way, it is also possible to form two or more projections or recesses respectively, depending on the diameter size of the tubes.
When using standardised caps with identically shaped recesses 16 (Fig. 7), the projection is formed by inserting a hollow cylindrical shaped element 17 into one of the caps 3 or 4, to bring the tube ends 1 and 2 together.
The closure caps of the invention are suitable not only in connection with coating the tubes with a tubular coating, but also in connection with the wrapping of the tubes with a thermoplastics material which is extruded as a strip. It is also possible to coat tubes which are provided with a socket at one end, this not being shown here, with caps adapted to the two different diameters. After coating is carried out, the coupling regions are severed and the caps remain to protect the tubes.
