Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO COLLAPSIBLE BUILDINGS COMPRISING A SERIES OF ARCHED MEMBERS HINGED TOGETHER IN A FAN-LIKE ARRANGEMENT (71) We, GRACE ELLEN KENCH of 5 Thorpe Bay Gardens, Thorpe Bay, Essex and GRAHAM FREDERICK KENCH of 24 Hillway, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, both British subjects do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a foldable building, suitable for use as a collapsible tent, comprising a main frame which is covered with canvas and comprises a series of arched members. The word "canvas" is used throughout this specification to include any foldable and/or flexible material. The canvas is, preferably, waterproof.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a foldable building, suitable for use as a collapsible tent, comprising a main frame covered with canvas, as herein before defined, and consisting of a series of arched members which are hinged in a fan-like arrangement to a base and each of which comprises at least three components pivotally connected together for pivotal movement in the plane in which the components lie. Thus, when the arched members are in a collapsed condition with respect to the base, one or more of the components can be pivoted with respect to its or their adjacent component or components in such a way as to transform the collapsed building into a folded and preferably portable condition.
Preferably, also, the building is a tent, in which case, the collapsed and folded tent can be easily housed in a container, such as a carrying case, which may be secured to one of the two end arched members such that, in use of the tent, the container remains on a supporting surface, such as the ground, with the associated arched member resting upon or supported by it. Thus, on site removal of the tent, the arched members are merely collapsed and folded away directly into their container for subsequent transportation by hand. Each arched member may be made up of as many pivoted components, but at least three, that are necessary to effect folding of the collapsed members into a conveniently small space. However, it will be appreciated that for each building, each arched member comprises the same number of components as the other arched members of the building and that the pivotal connections between respective components of associated arched members preferably lie, in register, one on top of the other with the building in its collapsed condition.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, preferred forms of tent, in accordance therewith, will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a collapsible and foldable tent in an erected condition; Fig. 2 is a side view of a portion of the tent, shown in Fig. 1, but in a collapsed condiction Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tent, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in a collapsed and folded condition in a carrying case; Fig. 4 is a diagramatic view of a pivot arrangement of components forming the structural arched members of the tent of Figs. 1 to 3; Fig. 5 is a side view of a preferred form of pivot connector for joining adjacent com ponents together; and Figs. 6a, 6b and 6c are three diagramatic views of a modified form of tent in three folded conditions.
Referring now to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, a collapsible and foldable tent 1 com prises a series of arched members 2, constituting a main frame, which are covered with a waterproof material 3, such as canvas. The arched members 2 are hingedly secured to a base 4 in a fan-like configuration and each member comprises three components, two substantially straight components 5 and an intermediate, arched component 6. Each end of the components 6 is pivotally secured to a respective component 5 by means of a pivot connector 7, as shown in Fig. 5, which is secured to the adjacent ends of the associated straight and arched components 5, 6.
In this particular case, the components 5, 6 are made of tubular aluminium or aluminium alloy and the connectors 7 com prise two portions 8, 9 pivotally attached to each other by a pivot pin 10 passing through in-register holes in the two portions. However, any suitable, preferably lightweight, material may be used for the components 5, 6. Each portion 8, 9 is insertible in respec- tive ends of the tubular components and the component ends are swaged on to, or otherwise secured to, respective portions.
A sleeve (not shown) is provided with at least one pivot connector 7 so that, when the components 5 are pivoted with respect to and unfolded from the component 6, this sleeve may be located over the respective pivot connector(s) to maintain the two portions 8, 9 in substantial axial alignment during subsequent erection and use of the tent.
Advantageously, a sleeve is provided with each of the two pivot connectors associated with the respective components 5 which extend in substantially vertical planes with the tent erected. Preferably, one of the portions 8, 9 is provided with a projecting stud (not shown) which can be engaged in a bayonet-type slot in the sleeve to retain the latter in position during use.
A carrying case 11, secured to one of the two outermost arched members 2, acts as a support for this particular member during use of the tent. Thus, the tent 1 may be collapsed from an erect condition and then folded away into its carrying case 11 which may be provided with a lid or other closure 12. However, a carrying case may be pro- vided which is not secured to the tent but is merely used for transportation purposes. A pull cord 13 is provided on the arched component 6 of the outermost arched member 2 remote from the other outermost member associated with the carring case 11 and is used to erect the unfolded but collapsed tent from its carrying case with the arched members 2 fanning out to provide the main frame supporting the canvas. It will be appreciated, however, that such a pull cord may not be necessary. In fact, any equivalent means, such as a handle, may be provided.
A strengthening strut 14 is secured between at least two arched members 2, and preferable between at least two components 5, to add to the rigidity and stability of the erected tent.
In Figs. 6a to 6c, there is shown another form of tent 1' which is in various stages of being folded. This tent 1' has arched members 2' comprising five components, two substantially straight components 5', two arched components 6' and an intermediate, substantially straight component 5". Each component 5' is pivoted at 7' to a respective component 6', the two components 6' each being pivoted at 7" to respective ends of the component 5". The two components 5' are pivoted to their respective components 6' at varying distances along their lengths to allow a particular folding operation to be performed. This arrangement allows the tent 1' to be larger than the previous tent described with reference to Figs. 1 to 4 but permits it to be folded into a conveniently small size for packing and/or transportation by hand.
Fig. 6a shows the tent 1' in a collapsed but partially-folded condition, Fig. 6b shows the tent in a further partially-folded condition and Fig. 6c shows the tent in its fully-folded condition ready for packing and/or transportation.
Thus, it can be seen that the present invention provides a foldable building, such as a collapsible tent, which can be erected in a comparatively short time, which can be constructed as a portable article, which can be stored in a comparatively small space and which is highly economical to construct and store.
