(54) A HEALTH PRESERVATION WAIST BAND (71) I, TAKEO NAKAYAMA, a Japanese citizen, of 25-19, 2-chome Kobinata, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to health preservation waist bands and more particularly, to health preservation waist bands for use by persons who are suffering from lumbago which include permanent magnets normally adapted to be positioned on the opposite sides of the backbone and more particularly, the backbone portion of the waist of such a person when the waist band is worn about the waist portion of the wearer so that strong magnetic forces provided by the magnets can permeate into the interior of the wearer's body to cure the lumbago as well as the waist band giving protection of the wearer's belly portion against becoming chilled.
There have been proposed and practically employed a great number of health preserva tion waist bands and the prior art health preservation waist bands have been found satisfactory to some extent so far as they serve to protect the belly portion of the wearer against the possibility of becoming chilled. However, when used by the persons who are suffering from lumbago, such prior art health preservation waist bands are un satisfactory from the view point of curing pains in the wearer's backbone and especially pains in the backbone of the wearer's waist portion.
British Patent Specification No. 1,421,512 describes and claims an abdominal band which comprises an elongate main body including an expansible rubberized textured layer, a cloth layer sewed to one side of said rubberised textured layer and a plurality of longitudinally spaced magnet-receiving at tachment members of foamed synthetic resin interposed between said rubberised and cloth layers in the intermediate section of said band between the opposite ends thereof with the spacing between adjacent magnet-receiving attachment members adapted to accomodate the backbone of a user when said band is worn around the body of a user, and each of said magnet-receiving attachment members including a plurality of laterally spaced magnets.
Therefore, one principal object of the present invention is to provide a health preservation waist band which can effectively cure pains in the backbone of the wearer's waist portion as well as protect the wearer's belly portion against the possibility of becoming chilled when the band is worn about the wearer's waist portion.
According to the present invention there is provided a health preservation waist band comprising a flexible and elastic elongate main body, a hosiery piece applied to one side of said body and a piled fabric applied to the other side of said body, a plurality of fasteners secured to the surface of said main body on which the hosiery piece is positioned at one end of the main body for engagement with said piled fabric on the other surface of the main body at the other end thereof so as to hold the waist band on the waist; and rectangular sponge pieces positioned on said one side of the main body in the lengthwise central region thereof two sides of each sponge piece being at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the main body and each sponge piece having permanent magnets received therein, the sponge pieces and the permanent magnets received therein being detachably held in position on the main body by one or more pockets, the or each pocket including an open end, and the or each pocket being formed by a corresponding cloth piece applied over the or each sponge piece to be held thereby and which is sewn to the main body. Conveniently the fasteners are Velcro (Registerd Trade Mark) fasteners, and preferably there are a plurality of said pockets.
Preferably the flexible and elastic elongate main body includes a rubberized sheet the hosiery piece being applied to one side of said rubberized sheet and the piled fabric being applied to the other side of said rubberized sheet. Optionally, the rubberized sheet has a plurality of respiratory holes.
When the main body of the health preserva tion waist band of the present invention includes a rubberized sheet, it is preferred for the rubberized sheet, hosiery piece and piled fabric to be sewn together along their peripheral edges except for a portion of the peripheral edge of the hosiery piece, and more preferably the rubberized sheet, hosiery piece and piled fabric are further sewn together transversely of the main body in longitudinally spaced positions with respect to said body at one end portion of said body thereby to provide a pocket on said surface of the main body where the hosiery piece is positioned in co-operation with said non-sewn portion in the peripheral edge of the hosiery piece. In addition, it is preferred for said open end of the or each pocket forming cloth piece to have a closure flap secured thereto and a fastener attached to said closure flap.
In some embodiments of the present invention each sponge piece further includes a plurality of recesses, each receiving a respective permanent magnet and a regenerated cellulose (by which term is meant Cel lophane-Registered Trade Mark) film which holds said permanent magnets in position within said recesses, the pocket forming cloth pieces being applied over the Cellophane films as well as the sponge pieces.
In other embodiments of the present invention, each sponge piece further includes a plurality of recesses, each receiving a respective permanent magnet, and in which to each of the permanent magnets there is applied adhesive about the periphery thereof to hold the magnet in position within the corresponding recess in the sponge piece.
In yet further embodiments of the present invention each sponge piece has a plurality of recesses spaced transversely of the main body, each receiving a respective permanent magnet, or alternatively each sponge piece has a plurality of recesses arranged in rows which are arranged transversely and longitudinally of the main body, each recess receiving a respective permanent magnet.
Preferably a respective Cellophane (Registered Trade Mark) film having a narrower width than the width of each sponge piece is applied over the permanent magnets in the or each row thereof which is transverse of the main body to hold said magnets in place, the pocket forming cloth pieces being applied over the Cellophane films as well as the sponge pieces.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a reverse side view of the first embodiment of waist band of the invention showing the band in its extended condition: Figure 2 is a fragmentary view on an enlarked scale of said first embodiment of waist band as shown in Figure 1 with a portion thereof broken away to show the inner structure of the band; Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of a second embodiment of health preservation waist band constructed in accordance with the principle of the present invention in its extended condition with a portion thereof broken away to show the inner structure of the band; and Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of Figure 3.
The present invention will be now described referring to the accompanying drawings.
The first embodiment of health preservation waist band of the present invention shown in Figures 1 & 2 generally comprises an elongated flexible and elastic main body 1 which consists of an elongated rubberized sheet 2, a hosiery piece 3 having a shape substantially similar to that of the rubberized sheet and applied to one side of the rubberized sheet 2 (the side of the rubberized sheet which is the inner side when the waist band is applied about the waist portion of a human body) and a piled fabric 4 having a shape substantially similar to that of the rubberized sheet 2 and hosiery piece 3 and applied to the other side of the side of the rubberized sheet which is the outer side when the waist band is applied about the waist portion of the human body.
The whole peripheral edges of the rubberized sheet 2, hosiery piece 3 and piled fabric 4 are registered with each other. Narrow width marginal strips 5 are applied along the peripheral edges of the rubberized sheet 2, hosiery piece 3 and piled fabric 4 except for a portion of the peripheral edge of the hosiery piece and sewn to the peripheral edges of the three components of the main body 1 by means of hem stitches 51 except for the portion of the hosiery piece periphery to thereby connect the three main body components together into a unitary structure.
Four vertically spaced Velcro (Registered Trade Mark), fasteners 6 are fixedly secured to one end portion of the main body 1 on one surface thereof where the hosiery piece 3 is positioned to engage the piled fabric 4 on the other surface of the main body 1 to thereby hold the waist band on the waist portion of the human body. It will be understood that the position where the Velcro fasteners 6 engage the piled fabric 4 may vary depending upon the girth or peripheral dimensions of the wearer.
The center portion of the main body 1 on the surface thereof where the hosiery piece 3 is positioned has a series of sponge pieces 7 secured thereto on the opposite sides of the area la where the backbone portion of the human waist contacts when the waist band is worn about the waist portion of the human body.
In the illustrated embodiment, three vertical sponge pieces 7 are positioned in laterally spaced relationship on each of the opposite sides of the backbone contacting area la in the center portion of the waist band at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the main body.
The rubberized sheet 2, hosiery piece 3 andq piled fabric 4 are further sewn together in longitudinally spaced positions in the center of the main body 1 by means of additional seams ic which extend across the width of the main body. The two adjacent seams lc on each of the opposite sides of the center or the backbone contacting area la of the main body 1 also secure a cloth piece 11l at the opposite side edges thereof to the main body 1 to thereby provide magnet receiving pockets on the opposite sides of the center of the main body 1. A plurality of vertical sponge pieces 7 (three sponge pieces in this embodiment) each having a plurality of recesses 8 in which flattened permanent magnets 9 are received are detachably inserted in each of the thus formed pockets. The lower ends of the cloth pieces 111 are sewn to the lower edges of the rubberized sheet 2, hosiery piece 3 and piled fabric 4 when the three main body components are sewn together whilst the upper ends of the cloth pieces 111 are left unsewn to provide the mouths of the magnet receiving pockets. The magnets 9 in each of the sponge pieces 7 are in series connected by a Cellophane film 10.
A closure flap 12l is sewn to the mouth of the magnet receiving pocket and a suitable fastener 13 is attached to the closure flap 12' to normally close the magnet receiving pocket.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is substantially similar to the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 except that each sponge piece 7 is provided with a plurality of magnet receiving recesses 8 arranged in vertical and horizontal rows, respectively, for receiving the permanent magnets 9 therein.
The construction and arrangement of the remaining components are substantially similar to the corresponding components of the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 and thus, description of the corresponding components will be omitted herein.
With the before-mentioned construction and arrangement of the components of the health preservation waist band of the present invention, when the waist band is applied about the waist portion of a wearer who is suffering from lumbago, the magnet receiving sponge pieces 7, 7 are positioned on the opposite sides of the backbone in the waist portion of the wearer and the permanent magnets provide magnetic forces which permeate into the interior of the wearer's body to cure pains in the waist portion of the wearer from which he is suffering as well as protect the belly portion of the wearer against the possibility of becoming chilled.
The cure effects provided by the waist band of the invention are quite different from and more satisfactory than those obtainable by the conventional waist bands which are not provided with the permanent magnets. Furthermore, since the magnet receiving sponge pieces are positioned in positions offset with respect to the backbone in the waist portion of the wearer when the waist band is worn on the human body, the waist band can be comfortably worn Iby the wearer to thereby cure the lumbago from which he is suffering without giving any pain to him.
Furthermore, since the magnet receiving pockets are provided in the main body on the inner surface thereof (when applied about the human body) and the sponge pieces having the permanent magnets received therein are detachably received in the pockets, the sponge pieces can be conveniently taken out of the pockets when the waist band is desired to be washed.
