Abstract

159,826. Thomson, G. C.' Aug. 7, 1919, [Convention date]. Bottles, washing.-Machines in which bottles are carried by a conveyer through various cleansing compartments are provided with a tank constructed, shaped and inclined to facilitate drainage and the separation of solids from the cleansing solution. Labels and other rubbish collecting in a compartment V in which the bottles are sprayed with hot water, are removed by a belt 67 with transverse serrated rubber scrapers 66 which carry the debris to a conveyer 74 discharging to a tank 80, any trash adhering to the conveyer 74 being removed by a cylindrical rubber roller (not shown). The liquid with the remaining solids flows to a chamber 75, heavy matter being deposited and drawn off through a pipe 95, and the liquid rising and flowing into a compartment U the floor of which is divided into two similar sumps, each with a false bottom 99 and a connecting valve 100. The first sump receives liquid from the chamber 75 and overflows into the second sump from which the suction for the sprayers is taken. The lower compartment of each sump can on closing the valve 100 be cleared of sediment. The feed to the tank is regulated by a ball-float, an overflow pipe being provided to drain off surplus water and incidentally indicating to the operator the degree of pollution of the water. The doors at each end of the tank consists of a series of hinged flaps 127, Fig. 12, mounted on spring hinges 128a and shaped to conform to the bottle outline.
