Description

(54) APPARATUS FOR REMOVING THE BLADE FROM A SCALPEL HANDLE (71) We, LANCE BLADES LIMI TED, a British Company, of Lancet House, 290/300 Broadfield Road, Sheffield, S8 OXQ, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to apparatus for removing the blade from a scalpel handle.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings shows in side elevation a scalpel blade 1 and scalpel handle 2 of a commercially available type made in accordance with British Standards Specification No. 2982. At the end of the handle 2 is a blade-mounting portion 3 comprising an elongate boss having a respective longitudinal groove 4 on each side as shown in the plan view of the handle, Figure 2. The blade 1 is mounted on the handle 2 by inserting the boss in a broad first portion SA of a longitudinal slot in the blade and then engaging the edges of a narrower second portion 5B of the slot in the grooves 4.
Figure 3 shows the blade 1 partly fitted to the handle 2. The blade 1 is slid axially along the boss 3 until the end of the slot portion 5A reaches a shoulder 6, when the blade (previously forced to assume a slightly bowed configuration) springs flat with its end 7 behind the shoulder 6 as seen in Figure 4.
The blade is now firmly attached to the handle and cannot be removed without first forcing up its end 7 to clear the shoulder 6.
Unaided removal of the blade is awkward and unsafe and it is an object of the invention to provide an apparatus for removing the blade from a scalpel handle which is easy and convenient to use.
The present invention provides an apparatus for removing the blade from a scalpel handle of the type in which a scalpel blade is mounted on the scalpel handle by a grooved boss with a shoulder engaging a slot in the blade, the apparatus comprising a body having an aperture to receive the blade end of a scalpel, and abutment means provided adjacent the aperture to deform the blade to disengage it from the shoulder and hold the blade whilst the handle is withdrawn.
The abutment means can be recessed to accommodate the boss of the handle.
The apparatus can comprise a hollow container to hold removed blades and the aperture can be an entry into the container.
The abutment means can comprise a manually movable part to deform the blade.
The manually movable part can be resiliently deformable.
The manually movable part can comprise a cantilever-mounted strip defining part of the container.
The distal end of the strip can extend beyond the container, and the abutment means can comprise a flange on the distal end of the strip and an edge of a wall of the container.
The container can comprise a box and the strip can define one wall of the box.
The mounted end of the strip can be mounted by means of projecting detents engaging complementary apertures.
The apparatus can be integrally-formed from a plastics material.
By way of example only, an illustrative embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 to 4 show prior art and have already been discussed, Figure 5 shows an apparatus for removing the blade from a scalpel handle, the apparatus embodying the invention and being shown opened-up during manufacture, and Figures 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are respectively side elevation, plan, underneath plan, rear elevation and front elevation views of the apparatus.
Referring to Figure 5, an apparatus for removing the blade from a scalpel handle comprising a unitary moulding of polypropylene in the form of a rectangular box 20 with a lid 21 attached to it bv an integral hinge 22 along one short side of the box. On each long side of the lid a respective depending portion 23 is provided adjacent the hinge 22. Each depending portion 23 carries two outwardly projecting detents 24 to engage slots 25 in the box 20 when the lid 21 is closed.
Above each slot 25 a respective camming surface 26 is provided to deform the depending portions resiliently inwards when the box is being closed, after which the detents 24 spring into the slots 25. Contiguous with each depending portion 23 is a respective projecting lip or beading 27 to grip and cover a corresponding part of the top of the box when the lid is closed.
At the ends of the depending portions 23 remote from the hinge, the lid 21 has a part 28 which is simply planar (that is, it has no flange or sidewall) and is resiliently deform able.
The distal end of the lid 21 has a peripheral flange 29 provided with a centrally-positioned rectangular recess 30 and a respective rect angular recess 31 in each side. When the lid is closed, the recesses 31 overlie the edge of the corresponding short side (34) of the box.
The short side (34) of the box has less height than the adjacent long sides to leave a rectangular space 32 to receive the flanged end of the lid 21. A rectangular recess 33 is provided at the centre of the top of the short side 34.
Manufacture of the apparatus is completed by applying a suitable cement to the portions 23 and closing the lid 21 so that it is fixed permanently closed. In this condition, the apparatus has the appearance shown in Figures 6 to 10 and the end of the lid with the flange 29 is cantilever mounted with the lower end of the deepest part of flange 29 level with the top of the short side 34.
To use the apparatus, a user inserts the blade of a scalpel, blade uppermost ,into the box between the top of the short side 34 and the underneath of the lid 21. In this position, the boss of the scalpel handle lies in the recess 33, the underside of the blade rests on the top edge of the short side 34, the topside of the unmounted end of the blade abuts the underside of the lid, and the lower front edge of the flange 29 abuts the top side of the scalpel handle. The user now presses down wardly on the front edge of the lid (the box being assumed to be held in the user's left or right hand as convenient) and draws the scalpel handle away from the box. The lid is able to move downwardly since the recesses 31 accommodate the top of the short side 34.
The action of pressing down the lid causes the scalpel blade to be resiliently deformed so that the end of the blade is disengaged from the shoulder 6 and the action of drawing the handle away from the box removes the blade from the holder since the rear of the front edge of the flange 29 engages the end of the blade and prevents its being withdrawn from the box with the handle. As the handle is withdrawn the boss of the handle passes through the recess 30. When the handle is fully disengaged from the handle, it falls into the box 20 and the apparatus can be used to remove further blades from scalpels until such time as the box is full when the whole apparatus can be disposed of.
Advantages of the described apparatus are that it is simple to use, enables scalpel blades to be removed safely, acts as a receptacle for used blades, and is cheap enough to be used as a disposable item.
The following are suitable dimensions for the apparatus, the reference letters being those marked in Figure 5.

each long side of the lid a respective depending portion 23 is provided adjacent the hinge 22.

The user now presses down wardly on the front edge of the lid (the box being assumed to be held in the user's left or right hand as convenient) and draws the scalpel handle away from the box. The lid is able to move downwardly since the recesses
31 accommodate the top of the short side 34.
