Description

(54) A GULLY (71) We, WAVIN B.V., a Dutch Corporate Body of 251 Handellaan, Zwolle, Holland, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to gullies.
The invention provides a gully comprising a substantially tubular lower part having at least one outlet, a substantially tubular upper part adapted to be closed by a cover, an end of one of said parts being divided into two wall portions one of which is axially longer than the other, defining therebetween a recess for accommodating either one end of the other of said parts, or an end of a substantially tubular spacer member which has an axial length less than the axial length of the longer wall portion, the other end of which spacer member abuts said one end of the other of said parts.
A gully of this type is suitable particularly, but not exclusively for use as a pavement or road gully or as an inspection chamber.
In order that the invention may be well understood an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a partially cut away elevational view of a gully; and Figure 2 is a detail of Figure 1 on a larger scale.
The illustrated gully 1 comprises a lower part 2 of substantially tubular form with, in this case, a circular cross section. A single outlet 3 from lower part 2 is shown but any number of outlets and/or inlets may be provided according to the use to which the gully is to be put. An upper part 5 of the gully is also substantially tubular and is shown closed by a cover 4 which may be a metal grid or solid manhole cover depending upon the use of the gully.
The lower end of the upper part is divided into inner and outer wall portions 11 and 13 which together define a recess 10 therebetween.
In the illustrated gully the axially longer wall portion is the inner wall portion 11 which is a substantially tubular support member in the form of a cylinder of somewhat smaller diameter than the wall of the upper part 5.
The support member is connected to the inside of the upper part at a region spaced from the lower end thereof. The other wall portion 13 is then the portion of the upper part 5 between the connecting region and the lower end. In normal use the lower part 2 fits telescopically within the upper part 5 with the upper end 9 of the lower part 2 accommodated in recess 10. However, when it is necessary to raise the height of upper part 5 relative to the lower part 2, as, for instance, when the road or pavement in which the gully is located is resurfaced thereby raising the surface level, a substantially tubular spacer member 6 is located in the recess 10. The spacer member 6 has the same cross-sectional dimensions as the end 9 of the lower part 2 and is located with one end 7 accommodated in the recess 10 and the other end 8 abutting the end 9 of lower part 2.The spacer member 6 may have any axial length as required provided it does not extend beyond the end 12 of the longer wall portion 11. When the spacer member 6 extends beyond the end 13a of the shorter wall portion 13 the end 9 of the lower part is supported, as shown, by the axially longer wall portion 11. This connection between the upper and lower part of a gully allows for variations in the relative height of the upper end of the upper part relative to the lower part and prevents undesirable mutual shifting of the parts. The spacer member 6 is also simple to install. It will be appreciated that although the recess 10 is provided in the upper part in the described gully it is alternatively possible for it to be provided between two wall portions in the lower part.
Any of the parts of the described gully may be formed from plastics material, preferably a thermo-plastics material such as polyvinylchloride or a fibre-reinforced thermo setting resin.
The illustrated gully has a circular crosssection.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A gully comprising a substantially tubular lower part having at least one outlet from the gully, a substantially tubular upper part adapted to be closed by a cover, an end of one of said parts being divided into two wall portions one of which is axially longer than the other, defining therebetween a recess for accommodating either one end of the other of said parts, or an end of a substantially tubular spacer member which has an axial length less than the axial length of the longer wall portion, the other end of which spacer member abuts said one end of the other of said parts.
2. A gully as daimed in claim 1, wherein said one part provided with said wall portions is the upper part.
3. A gulley as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said axially longer wall portion is disposed inwardly of the other wall portion.
4. A gully as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the axially longer wall portion comprises a substantially tubular support member connected to said one of said parts at a region spaced from said end thereof, the other wall portion comprising the portion of said part between said region and said end.
5. A gully as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, and including a said spacer member, wherein said one end of the other of said parts is supported by said axially longer portion when said spacer member has an axial length greater than the axial length of the other wall portion.
6. A gully as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, and including a said spacer member which has the same cross-sectional dimensions as said one end of the other of said parts.
7. A gully as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a cover for closing the upper part.
8. A gully as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the upper and lower parts are substantially circular in cross-section.
9. A gully as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein at least one of the upper and lower parts and any spacer member comprises plastics material.
10. A gully as claimed in claim 9, wherein the plastics material is a thermoplastics material.
11. A gully as claimed in claim 9 or 10, wherein the plastics material is polyvinylchloride.
12. A gully as claimed in claim 9, 10 or 11, wherein the plastics material is a fibrereinforced thermosetting resin.
13. A gully as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, for use as a pavement or road gully or as an inspection chamber.
14. A gully substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
