(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO A METHOD OF MAKING
A DISPLAY PANEL
(71) We, THE DECORATED TIN
PLATE SIGN COMPANY LIMITED, a
British company of Cross Lane Works,
Cross Lane, off High Street, London N8 7SA, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the followig statement:
This invention relates to a method of making a display panel, and more particularly although not exclusively to a display panel which is adapted to have temporary markings made on, or indicators positioned on, one surface of the display panel.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a method of making a display panel comprising the steps of providing a permanent coating or design, by printing or otherwise, on one surface of a substantially rigid sheet of metal, applying to said surface of said sheet a sheet of transparent or translucent material, placing a stiffening sheet of material against the other surface of the rigid sheet, and folding an edge portion of the rigid sheet to embrace a portion of the stiffening sheet.
Preferably said sheet of transparent or translucent material is adhered to the rigid sheet but alternatively it may be heat welded to the rigid sheet.
According to a second aspect of this invention there is provided a display panel comprising a substantially rigid sheet of metal provided on one surface with a permanent coating or design and having a sheet of transparent or translucent material applied to said one surface, said panel further comprising a stiffening sheet of material positioned against the other surface of the rigid sheet and being held in position by an edge portion of the rigid sheet which is folded over to embrace a portion of the stiffening sheet.
Conveniently the sheet of transparent or translucent material may be polyvinyl chloride, cellulose acetate or any other suitable plastics material. The exposed surface of the sheet of transparent or translucent material may have a gloss finish, a matt finish, or an embossed finish. Alternatively the surface may have some areas having one type of finnish and other areas having another type of finish. The surface, particularly when provided with a matt finish or an embossed finish, may be capable of being marked with such devices as felt tipped markers.
Advantageously the rigid sheet may be made of a magnetic metal such as tin plate or a non-magnetic metal such as, for example, aluminium.
Advantageously the stiffening sheet may be corrugated cardboard having its surface remote from the rigid sheet treated or coated in any suitable manner.
The rigid sheet may be provided with, for example, a monochrome coating of paint but preferably the sheet will be provided with more complex markings, which may for example, be in the form of a grid, a block diagram, a flow chart, a calendar or any other desired design.
Preferably the display panel may be rectangular.
When the rigid sheet is of a magnetic metal, the display panel may carry a magnetic marker. Alternatively the display panel whether provided with a sheet of magnetic material or not, may carry markers either in the form of adhesive coated paper or the like or any other form and having a patch of adhesive provided thereon.
Advantageously one panel may be connected with one or more other similar panels to provide a composite display system.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood and so that further features thereof may be appreciated, the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a panel in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on the line X-X of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, in forming a display panel in accordance with the invention, a generally rectangular sheet of tin plate 1, each corner of which is truncated, is provided on one surface, by means of lithographic-printing, with a white background on which black grid lines are superimposed to form a "squared" display surface (not shown).
The printed surface of the metal sheet 1 is then covered with a sheet 2 of corresponding size, of transparent or translucent plastics material such as cellulose acetate. A layer of adhesive 3 is provided between the sheet 2 of cellulose acetate and the printed surface of the metal sheet 1. The adhesive must be transparent or translucent when cured. The two sheets are then passed between calendering rollers to cause the sheets firmly to adhere one another. These rollers may be adapted to impart a gloss, a matt or an embossed surface to the cellulose acetate, or they may be adapted to produce some areas with one type of surface and other areas with other types of surfaces.
A stiffening sheet 4 of corrugated cardboard is provided, which is also rectangular but of lesser dimensions than the substantially rectangular metal sheet 1. The stiffening sheet 4 is placed adjacent the surface of the metal sheet 1 remote from the printed surface and the edge portions 5 of the metal sheet 1 are folded over twice (see Figure 2) so that they embrace the peripheral edge portions of the stiffening sheet 4, thereby effectively connecting the stiffening sheet 4 to the metal sheet 1 by sandwiching each edge portion of the stiffening sheet between two portions of the metal sheet 1. By this means the remaining exposed edges of the metal sheet are rounded so that a person handling the display panel will be less likely to be cut by an edge portion of the metal sheet. In addition the sheet of cellulose acetate 2 is along each edge, trapped between the stiffening sheet 4 and the metal sheet 1 and thus the layer of cellulose acetate is prevented from peeling off. A further feature is that the rounded edge of each side of the metal panel provides an abutment which in certain applications can facilitate the mounting of the panel.
In utilising such a display panel, the panel may be fixed in a vertical position with its printed face visible and then words, figures or other symbols may be written upon the sheet of cellulose acetate in those areas which are provided with a matt or embossed finish, with felt tipped markers. Magnetic markers may also be provided comprising small magnets mounted on light-weight members formed of a plastics material or other suitable material, which may be coloured in a colour which contrasts with the colour of the display panel, the magnets being attracted to the metal sheet and thereby being supported on the display panel. Alternatively adhesive coated markers may be utilised.
One or more such display panels may be utilised as teaching aids, or as planning aids, and it will be appreciated that varying forms of printing may be utilised for a multitude of purposes.
Of course, whilst the metal sheet of the display panel described above is formed of tin-plate, any other suitable material could be employed such as, for example aluminium. The use of a light material, such as aluminium, is particularly advantageous in the case of very large display panels.
It will be appreciated that rather than cellulose acetate the translucent or transparent sheet could be formed of polyvinyl chloride or any other translucent or transparent sheet material. It will also be apparent that this sheet may be attached to the metal sheet in several different ways, such as, for example, be heat welding. The translucent or transparent sheet could be provided with a preformed surface rather than having a particular type of surface imparted to it by means of calendering rollers during attachment to the metal sheet.
It will be particularly appreciated that the design on the metal sheet could take any form whatsoever and could be provided in a variety of ways in addition to lithographic printing. The design could be provided, for example by means of spray painting.
It is also envisaged that the metal sheet and the sheet of transparent or translucent material need not necessarily be passed between calendering rollers to ensure adherence of the two layers to one another since the transparent or translucent sheet could be fixed to the metal sheet in any type of press or in other suitable ways.
Of course the support sheet need not be corrugated cardboard but could, for example be a plastics or foamed plastics material.
It is envisaged that display panels in accordance with the invention will be utilised in a wide variety of situations such as, for example, in schools, offices and factories. It is also envisaged that display panels in accordance with the invention could be employed in advertising displays, the panels being particularly suitable for use out doors.
It will be realised that the sheet of translucent or transparent material is particularly advantageous in that it provides a protective coating over the surface of the metal sheet.
In particular the sheet of translucent or transparent material provides a coating which is both waterproof and to a substantial degree, wearproof and which serves to prevent scratching or other degradation of the design formed on the metal sheet.
Finally, it is envisaged that display panels in accordance with the invention could be utilised as game boards. In particular panels formed from ferro-magnetic material could be used as magnetic game boards to be used in conjunction with magnetic markers, the sheet of translucent or transparent material serving to protect the metal sheets from wear caused by the movement of the magnetic markers over the panels.
