Abstract

159,497. Trent, W. E. Feb. 25, 1920, [Convention date]. Addition to 151,236. Surface-tension separating-processes. -The agglomerated mass obtained in accordance with the parent. Specification is distilled in order to recover the agglomerating-agent together with any volatile constituents of the coal. The condensed vapours may subsequently be used to agglomerate further carbonaceous particles. Preferably after being thinned with hydrocarbon liquid and commingled with air or gas, the mass is supplied from a hopper 46 into a , pipe 47 extending through a retort 45, which is heated by burning a combustible mixture delivered through a pipe .48. The material is carried through the retort in the current produced by a pump 50 and the treating-agent is volatilized together with the volatile constituents of the solid particles which latter may be separted in a dry settling-chamber 49. The distilled substances pass off through a pipe 51. Separation of fine ash particles contained in the carbonaceous matter is facilitated by expelling the volatile content explosively by heating with sufficient rapidity or by subsequently passing the particles through a zone of lower pressure. The volatile constituents and carbon particles may be delivered to a wet collecting chamber 54 receiving water from a pipe 55. Agitation of the condensed vapours causes the carbon and oils to agglomerate and exclude the non-carbonaceous particles and water.
