Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO
THREADED FASTENERS
(71) I, EDWARD PRICE, a British subject of 94 Brampton Grove, Kenton,
Harrow, Middlesex, HA3 8LF, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to threaded fasteners and provides threaded inserts and studs of new and improved design.
The threaded fasteners to which the invention relates are those in which a body has an external first screw thread for screwing into an internally threaded bore in a workpiece and a second'screw thread for screw-threadably receiving a threaded member to secure said member to said workpiece. Such fasteners are referred to hereinafter as "threaded fasteners of the kind referred to". Usually, the cooperating threaded member will serve to clamp a second workpiece to the first workpiece (i.e. that workpiece having the threaded bore). When the second screw thread is an external screw thread, the threaded fastener of the kind referred to is known as a "stud" or "bolt stud" and when the second screw thread is an internal screw thread, the threaded fastener of the kind referred to is known as an "insert".
Threaded fasteners of the kind referred to have been known for many years and are widely used in mechanical engineering. For example, bolt studs are extensively used for securing cover plates to machines and cylinder heads to cars. To the best of my knowledge, all known threaded fasteners of the kind referred to have concentric screw threads and therefore torque applied to, tighten or loosen the cooperating threaded member received in or on the second screw thread can rotate the threaded fastener in the threaded bore of the first workpiece.
This situation has militated against the use of such threaded fasteners and has led to the development of alternative fasteners which are generally more expensive to manufacture. It is an object of this invention to improve threaded fasteners of the kind referred to so that the torque applied to the cooperating member cannot directly be applied to the fastener itself to rotate it in the threaded bore of the first workpiece. I have found that this object can be achieved in simple and relatively inexpensive manner by avoiding the concentricity of the first and second screw threads.
According to the present invention therefore, there is provided a threaded fastener of the kind referred to in which the first and second screw threads thereof are mutually eccentrically disposed. The fastener can be a stud or an insert and except for the eccentricity of the screw threads can be of any shape' or configuration conventionally adopted for threaded studs or inserts. The screw threads can be, for example, Metric or Unified form threads and can extend over the whole or only part of the fastener body.
It will be appreciated that if the first workpiece is non-rotatable, the fastener of the invention will not rotate when the cooperating member is being tightened or loosened into or onto the second screw thread.
When the fastener of the invention is a stud, the cooperating member will usually be a nut but can be any other cooperatingly internally threaded member. When the fastener of the invention is an insert, the cooperating member usually will be a bolt but can be any other cooperatingly externally threaded member.
The fasteners of the invention are used in conventional manner for threaded fasteners of the kind referred to and have particular application to bolting a second workpiece to the first workpiece.
According to a first method aspect of the present invention, there is provided a inethod of bolting two workpieces together with a fastener of the invention in the form of a stud, which method comprises forming a threaded bore in a first workpiece to threadably receive the first screw thread of the stud; forming a plain bore through the second workpiece to slidably receive the second screw thread of the stud; screwing the first screw thread of the stud into said threaded bore to attach the stud to the first workpiece; passing the second screw thread of the stud through the said plain bore; and screwing a nut onto the second screw thread to clamp the two workpieces together.
According to a second method aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of bolting two workpieces together with a fastener of the invention in the form of an insert, which method comprises forming a threaded bore in a first workpiece to threadably receive the first screw thread of the insert; forming a plain bore in the second workpiece to slidably receive a threaded bolt which will threadably engage in the second screw thread of the insert; -screwing the first screw thread of the insert into said threaded bore to attach the insert to the first workpiece; passing the threaded bolt through said plain bore; and screwing the bolt into the second screw thread of the insert to clamp the workpieces together.
In preferred embodiments of said methods of the invention, there are provided two said sets of threaded and plain bores at spaced locations in the workpieces with the eccentricity of the bores in each set opposed and respective studs and nuts or inserts and bolts clamp the workpieces together at each set. The mutual oppositon of eccentricity prevents mutual rotation of the workpieces if not otherwise nonrotatably secured.
The following is a description by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of preferred embodiments of the present invention. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a stud in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is an end view of the stud of
Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of an insert in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 4 is an end view of the insert of
Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of the stud of Figures 1 and 2 securing two workpeices together; and
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view of the insert of Figures 3 and 4 securing two workpieces together.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2, a stud, generally indicated at 1, has a body with an external first screw thread 2 and an external second screw thread 3. The first screwthread 2 is formed about a lower cylindrical portion 4 of the body whilst the second screw-thread 3 is formed about an upper cylindrical portion 5 of said body. The axis of body portion 5 is eccentrically offset from the axis of body portion 4 and hence the screw threads 3, 2 are correspondingly offset.
Referring now to Figure 5,-a blind bore 51 is drilled and tapped in a first workpiece 52 to threadably receive the first screw thread 2 of the stud 1. A plain bore 53 is drilled through a second workpiece 54 to slidably receive the second screw thread 3.
The first screw thread is screwed into the tapped hole 51 and the workpieces 52, 54 mutually positioned so that the screw thread 3 extends through and protrudes from the plain bore 53. A nut 55 is then screwed onto the screw thread 3 and tightened to clamp the workpieces 52, 54 together. If necessary the workpiece 52 is restrained against movement during tightening of the nut 55 to prevent rotation of that workpiece.
It is preferred that when the workpieces are clamped together by two or more studs 1 at spaced locations, at least two sets of bores 51, 53 to receive the studs have opposed eccentricity as can be seen in
Figure 5 in the case of the holes 51, 53 and 511, 531 receiving adjacent studs 1, 1'. This arrangement prevents rotation of workpiece 52 when the studs 1, 11 extend from the workpiece through the respective bores 53, 531
Referring to Figures 3 and 4, an insert generally indicated at 31, has a body with an external first screw thread 32 and an internal second screw thread 33. The first screw thread 32 is formed about a main cylindrical portion 34 of the body whilst the second screw thread 33 is a drilled and tapped bore 35 which extends through the body portion 34 and a minor cylindrical portion 36 of the body. The bore 35 and body portion 36 are eccentrically offset from the main body portion 34 but the said bore 35 and body portion 36 are mutually concentric. The distal end of portion 36 is slightly deformed into an oval shape to form a locking element in manner known per se.
Use of the insert 31 is illustrated in Figure 6. A blind bore 61 is drilled and tapped in a first workpiece 62 to threadably receive the first screw thread 32 of the insert 31. A plain bore 63 is drilled through a second workpiece 64 to slidably receive the threaded shank of a bolt 65 to be threadably received in the second screw thread 33. The insert 31 is screwed into the tapped bore 61 and the workpieces mutually positioned so that the shank of bolt 65 can be passed through the bore 63 and screwed into the second screw thread of the inset to clamp the workpieces 62, 64 together. If necessary, the workpiece 62 is restrained against movement during tightening of the bolt 65 to prevent rotation of the workpiece.
As in the case of the use of studs 1, it is preferred that there are two sets of bores 61, 63 at spaced locations which sets are of opposed eccentricity as can be seen in
Figure 6 in the case of holes 61, 63 and 611, 63' receiving inserts 31, 311.
It will be appreciated that the invention is not restricted to the details particularly described above with reference to the drawings but that numerous modifications and variations can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following Claims.
