Description
(54) ROAD TRAFFIC BOLLARDS (71) We, PETER DE GARIS BLON DEL of Fontaine Bleau, Le Chine. Forest, Guernsey, Channel Islan(ls; antl RICHARD GERALD JAMES, of Le Rivage. Rue de La Rocque, L'Erce, St. Peters,
Guernsey, and formerly of Wcineken, La
Manche Estate, Vale, Guernsey. Channel
Islands, both British Subjects. do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be por lormed, to be particularly described in and liv the following statement:
This invention relates to bollards, such as are used for road traffic control. It is of course important that such bollards shall be visible both by day and night and they are frequently illuminated from within, particularly when they are positioned permanently in urban areas where a source of electric power is available.
There is a requirement for a cheap and satisfactorv form of bollard which is not illuminated from within but which is readily visible in the lights from passing vehicles. It is an object of the present invention to provide such a bollard.
In accordance with the present invention we provide a road bollard comprising a post and an element fitted over the post, the element being in the form of a hollow cylinder having on the outside a reflective coating and internal fixing which holds the element securely to the post at any desired height, leaving an annular space between the element and the post. The bollard is preferably also fitted with a cap which has a central aperture of a size to receive the post.
The reflective coating should preferably be a retro-reflective coating such as is produced by coatings containing glass beads.
The hollow cylinder of the bollard may be made of metal sheeting, especially aluminium sheeting, and the cap may be made of stainless steel.
In one of its aspects the invention consists of an element for fitting over a post to form a road bollard, the element being in the form of a hollow metal cylinder having on the outside a retro-reflective coating and an internal fixing to hold the element securely to a post at any desired height, leaving an annular space between the element and the post.
One form of the invention will now be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
The bollard in the drawing is shown as fitted over a standard 3-inch sign post 9 and consists of a cylinder 10 of aluminium sheeting which has been bent round to form a cylinder 19l/2 inches high and 10 inches in diameter, the joining edges being secured to an external joining piece 11 by rivetting.
Inside the cylinder 10 and near the foot thereof there is an attaching clip comprising a U-shaped collar 12 attached to a crossmember 13 in the form of a channel which is itself rivetted to the cylinder 10. By detaching one end of the collar 12 from the cross-member 13, the cylinder 10 can be slid up and down the post 9 to the desired height and the collar re-attached to the crossmember 13 to hold the cylinder firmly in position. The outside of the cylinder 10 has been covered with yellow Scotchlite (Trade
Mark) High Intensity material; this is a laminate, the essential characteristic of which is the presence of half-silvered glass beads encapsulated in an acrylate coating.
At the top of the bollard there is a stainless steel grey-coloured cap 14 which fits firmly over the top of the cylindrical member 10 and which has a central aperture 15 which fits snugly round the post 9.
If desired there may be two of the attaching clips instead of the one illustrated.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A road bollard comprising a post and

Claims (9)
1. A road bollard comprising a post and an element fitted over the post, the element being in the form of a hollow cylinder having on the outside a reflective coating and an internal fixing which holds the element securely to the post at any desired height, leaving an annular space between the element and the post.
2. A bollard according to claim 1 wherein the internal fixing is in the form of a collar.
3. A bollard according to claim 2 wherein the internal fixing is in the form of two collars.
4. A bollard according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the cylinder is fitted with a cap which has a central aper ture of a size to receive the post.
5. A bollard according to claim 4 wherein the cap is made of stainless steel.
6. A bollard according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the reflective coating is a retro-reflective coating.
7. A bollard according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the hollow cylinder is made of metal sheeting.
8. A bollard according to claim 7 wherein the metal sheeting is aluminium sheeting.
9. An element for fitting over a post to form a road bollard substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings, and described herein with reference thereto.
