Abstract

159,333. Brooks, B., and Brooks & Co., Ltd., J. B. Dec. 1, 1919. Laminar springs; straight bars and wires arranged for torsion.-A spring having superimposed laminations of varying length has each of the laminations divided longitudinally. In one form, a semi-elliptic spring comprises spring wires 1, Figs. 2 and 3, passing through holes in a metal block 2 and rigidly secured thereto. The extremities of the wires 1 of each lamination are secured within holes in metal plates or blocks 3 which may space apart the wires of the longer laminations as shown in Fig. 6, or may be in the form of cross-bars 3, Fig. 9, with arms 4 serving to prevent lateral displacement of the upper laminations. In another arrangement of the wires, a spring reinforcing-plate 5, Fig. 11, is fitted above them, or a corrugated band 3, Fig. 12, may encircle them. Wires 1, 6, Fig. 13, of different sizes may be used to make a lamination. Instead of ordinary wires, flat strips, stranded wires, or rods of square section diagonally arranged may be used. The laminations may be circular and concentric, the wires 1, Fig. 16, being bound by bands 3 or threaded through plates. This form is particularly applicable to torsion springs.
