Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CEILING DECORATION
(71) We, DESIGN PARTNERSHIP
LIMITED, a British Company, of Pippingford Park Manor, Nutley, Sussex, do hereby declare this invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to improvements in ceiling decoration.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a ceiling decoration which shall be particularly, but not exclusively, suitable for home use and which shall be usable by relatively unskilled persons to produce a pleasing aesthetic effect.
The present invention, broadly stated, provides a ceiling decoration for application to a ceiling or wall, comprising in combination a length of sheet material having two parallel rectilinear sides and carrying a line spaced a predetermined distance from one of said sides and extending parallel thereto and a plurality of corner pieces of sheet material each having a peripheral edge which includes first and second rectilinear sides which each extend for a distance at least equal to the spacing between the two sides of the length of material and in directions which intersect orthogonally, each corner piece having a pattern which includes a design at or adjacent to each of said first and second sides and spaced from the trailing end of the first and second sides considered in said direction by a distance corresponding to said predetermined distance and representing a continuation of said line.
The trailing ends of the first and second sides may be connected by a portion of the peripheral edge which is rectilinear or curved or of any desired configuration. It is preferred, however, that the trailing ends of the first and second sides should be connected by third and fourth rectilinear sides which intersect at right angles to form a corner, the third side being normal to the first side and parallel to the second side and the fourth side being normal to the second side and parallel to the first sides.
The leading ends of the first and second sides considered in said direction may be connected by a portion of the peripheral edge which is of any desired configuration.
It is to be understood that the line on the length of material may be a colour shading extending along the length of the strip.
Thus, for example, the length of material may carry a colour the depth of which varies from light to dark across the width of the strip and such colour variation may be considered as an infinite number of individual closely spaced lines the colour of which varies gradually across the width of the strip.
It is to be further understood that the line on the length of material may be one of a combination of lines and that it may be printed or take any other identifiable form such as, for example, an embossing of the material.
It is preferred that the design included in the pattern of each corner piece at or adjacent to each of the first and second sides should include a further line extending from each of such first and second sides.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an under-plan view of a ceiling decoration according to the invention as applied to a ceiling,
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating two further alternative ceiling decorations according to the invention, and
Figures 3, 4 and 5 illustrate alternative forms of corner pieces forming part of a ceiling decoration according to the invention and arranged to give a central ceiling design to match or complement a ceiling decoration according to the invention.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 it will be seen that a ceiling decoration according to this invention basically comprises a length of sheet material 1 having two parallel rectilinear sides 2 and 3 and carrying a continuous line 4 spaced a predetermined distance d from the side 2 and a plurality of corner pieces of sheet material indicated generally at 5. Four such corner pieces 5 would be used in a normal four cornered room, and would generally carry the same pattern. However, for convenience in illustrating the invention, Figure 1 shows two differently patterned and shaped corner pieces Sa and Sb and Figure 2 shows two further differently patterned corner pieces
Sc and Sd.
The periphery of the corner pieces S includes first and second rectilinear sides 6 and 7 which extend for a distance at least equal to the spacing between the sides 2 and 3 of the length of material 1 and in directions which intersect orthogonally. It will be seen that the sides 6 and 7 of the corner pieces Sb, Sc and Sd are of a length equal to the width of the material 1 and the length of the sides 6 and 7 of the corner piece Sa is greater than this width.
The trailing ends of the sides 6 and 7 may be connected by an edge portion of any desired configuration but it is preferred, as illustrated, that they are connected by third and fourth rectilinear sides 8 and 9 which intersect at right angles to form a corner.
The third side 8 is normal to the first side 6 and parallel to the second side 7 and the fourth side 9 is normal to the second side 7 and parallel to the first side 6.
In Figure 1 there is shown on the corner piece Sa a dotted line E representing a curved edge forming part of an arc of a circle joining the trailing ends of the sides 6 and 7 as an alternative to the sides 8 and 9.
The leading ends of the sides 6 and 7 are connected by an edge portion F of any suitable configuration several of such being shown in the drawings.
The corner pieces Sa and Sb carry a line pattern which terminates at the sides 6 and 7 in a line 10 which is spaced from the respective sides 8 and 9 by a distance d corresponding to the spacing of the line 4 from the side 2. Also, the line 10 at the sides 6 and 7 has a thickness or width corresponding to that of the line 4.
In use, four similarly patterned corner pieces S would be provided and applied to the four corners of the ceiling by an adhesive. Four lengths of material 1 would be cut from a roll of such material to the appropriate lengths so as to extend between adjacent corner pieces. Although the lengths required will vary from room to room, the fact that the line 4 is straight and continuous ensures that wherever the roll is cut to provide the appropriate length, the line 4 will always terminate at the cut edge and a distance d from the side 2. Thus when the material 1 is applied to the ceiling with the edge 2 along the side of the ceiling, the lines 10 of the corner pieces will appear as a continuation of the line 4 and present a continuity of pattern to the eye.
Figure 1 also shows a modification illustrating how the continuity of the line 4 may be broken if desired. As has been mentioned, the length of the material 1 required will vary from room to room. However, once it is known, the material 1 may be cut away and replaced by inserts such as the insert 11 which is rectangular in shape and dimensioned so as to be a continuation of the material 1. The insert 11 carries a pattern which terminates at two opposed edges ila and 11b in lines 12 spaced from the continuation 2a of the edge 2 by a distance d so as to be a continuation of the line 4. Such inserts 11 may be inserted as desired along the length of the material 1 but preferably symmetrically along the length thereof.
The corner pieces Sc and Sd are shown with more ornate designs than the corner pieces Sa and Sb. It will be noted that the corner piece Sc has lines 110 which terminate at the sides 6 and 7, are spaced from the respective sides 8 and 9 by a distance d and are of the same width as the line 4. The lines 110, as before, provide a continuation of the line 4 on the material 1 but they do not extend for any substantial distance. They do however form part of the pattern on the corner piece and, as a continuation of the line 4 lead the eye into the main pattern of the corner piece. It is considered within the scope of the invention that the lines 110 could be interrupted and could be a line of square or circular dots which could be of increasing or decreasing size.
The corner piece Sd shown in Figure 2 as a further alternative does not include in the pattern a line terminating at the sides 6 and 7. The pattern on the corner piece Sd, however, includes a design which at or adjacent to the sides 6 and 7 is spaced from the sides 8 and 9 by a distance d and which is adjacent the sides 6 and 7. In this example, the design at this location is a leaf 13. The eye of the beholder is therefor led from the line 4 to the leaf 13 and into the general pattern of the corner piece.
Figures 3, 4 and S illustrate various patterns and shapes of corner pieces which can form part of a ceiling decoration.
Because of the disposition of the lines 10 and 110 referred to above, four such corner pieces can be arranged as the four corners of a square, with the length of material 1 omitted, to provide a continuity of pattern as a ceiling decoration about, for example, a ceiling light. Such a ceiling pattern would match or complement a ceiling decoration composed of a length of material 1 and corner pieces S according to the invention.
It will be appreciated that the material 1 and corner pieces S will generally be in the nature of wallpaper or similar materials used for wall and ceiling coverings. It will be further appreciated that the ceiling decoration described can, if desired, be used as a wall decoration and the expression "ceiling decoration" is to be construed as including wall decoration.
