Description
(54) A VESSEL SUCH AS A COOKING UTENSIL AND HANDLE FOR SAME
(71) We, MEYER MANUFACTURING
COMPANY LIMITED, a Company organised and existing under the laws of Hong Kong, of 380 Kwun Tong Road, Kowloon, Hong
Kong, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to a cooking vessel and in particular, to applying a handle thereto.
According to the invention, there is provided a cooking vessel including a pan which has an outwardly-projecting generally cylindrical stud secured on an outer surface of its wall, the stud having a longitudinal axis and a pair of wings projecting laterally outwardly therefrom substantially in a plane containing the axis, the vessel also having a handle which fits snugly over the stud and has recesses to receive the wings so that relative rotation between the handle and the stud is prevented thereby.
Preferably the pair of wings may be formed by deforming the material of the stud. The stud is preferably metal and is preferably welded to the pan of the vessel. The principal function of the wings is to prevent relative rotation between the handle and the stud.
In a specially preferred embodiment of the invention, the handle may have a central bore therethrough and the stud may have a coaxial threaded blind bore therein. A hook having a straight shank, threaded at one end so that it can be screwed into the blind bore in the stud; may be passed through the bore in the handle, and when tightened, secures the handle to the pan. The hook end is useful to enable a person using the vessel to hang it up. This construction has the advantage of making it possible to ship the pans in disassembled condition so saving a great deal of shipping space, and assemble them without even a screwdriver. Also, such assembly can readily be done by unskilled persons. The exterior of the part of the handle nearest to the pan is protected by a cylindrical screen serving as a flameguard. To enhance appearance, the hook may be plated or coated with a bright metal.
The invention will be better understood from the following non-limiting description of an example thereof given with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view looking down of part of a pan including a stud, also showing in exploded view a flameguard and an handle.
Figure 2 is a cross-section on A-A in
Figure 1 taken in a radial plane.
Figure 3 is an end view of the handle, in the direction B in Figure 1,
Figure 4 is an axial section through a handle, showing a hook in position, and
Figure 5 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a saucepan according to the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a saucepan 10, to which is welded a stud 12. The stud 12 projects outwardly away from the interior of the cooking vessel.
It preferably, although not essentially, extends normally outwards away from the adjacent portion of the pan 10. The stud is generally cylindrical in form, but has wings 14. These may be produced by casting or by deforming the metal of the stud; for example, the wings may be produced by pinching the stud at opposed ends of a diameter by opposed pairs of jaws. They may be provided either before or after the stud 12 is secured to the pan 10.
The outer end of the stud has a blind bore 16 therein, and the inner cylindrical wall of this is threaded to receive the threaded end of a hook as will be later described.
The handle assembly for the pan also includes a flameguard 18, a handle 20, and a handle hook 22. The handle 20 is generally of conventional shape and may be of wood, synthetic resinous plastics material, or other suitable material. It has a central bore 24 therethrough, and a boss 26 extending from its inner end. The central bore 24 receives a hook 22 which has a straight shank and a threaded end 28. The flameguard 18 is in the form of a cylindrical metal screen which is a snug fit over the cylindrical boss 26. The inner end of the handle has a pair of recesses 30 communicating with the lower end of the bore 24. These recesses 30 are to receive the wings 14 on the stud 12. The relative dimensions are arranged so that the wings 14 are a tight push fit in the recesses 30.
The function of this construction is to prevent relative rotation between the handle 20 and the stud 12.
In assembling the handle assembly, the flameguard 18 is slid over the boss 26, and then the resulting handle assembly is applied in an axial direction on the stud 12. Then the hook 22 is inserted in the bore 24 and threaded into the blind bore 16. It is tightened manually, to hold the handle on to the stud.
However, for shipping purposes, the hook 22 and the handle 20 may be removed from the pan 10, which results in considerable saving of shipping space. The parts may be assembled upon arrival by unskilled personnel without the use of any tools.
The saucepan illustrated in Figure 5 includes a pan 100 and a lid 102, the latter having a conventional handle 104 secured by a screw 106. It is a distinctive feature of the pan that its upper rim has a particular edge formation, namely a portion 108 which is thicker than the remainder 110 of the wall, and a flat annular surface 112 which is inclined, as viewed in a vertical plane, to the vertical central axis 114 of the pan.
The lid 102 is also formed with a generally flat annular peripheral surface 116 which is at approximately the same angle to the axis 114 as the surface 112 and which, in appearance when the lid is on, merges smoothly with the surface 112.
A stud 120 is welded by a weld 122 to the pan 100. It has a blind bore therein which receives a threaded end 124 of a hook 126.
A handle 128 has a bore therein dimensioned so that the handle is a tight push fit over the stud 120. The handle has a reduced diameter portion 130 at its end nearer to the pan and this is covered and protected by a cylindrical metal flameguard sleeve 132 which extends up to and abuts the wall of the pan 100.
A washer 134 is placed in the distal end of the handle 128, and assists in locating the hook 126 within the central bore of the handle. The stud 120 has wings and the handle 128 has recesses similar to those described in connection with Figs. 1-4.
