Abstract

In a cylindrical housing (1) there is provided a central shaft (2) provided with adjustable blades (18). Said central shaft is hollow at one end (14), and this cavity opens into a number of ducts (12) directed sidewards. Said shaft, at the level of the solids feed (4), carries a cylinder (13) whose diameter is smaller than that of the housing. Said cylinder on its outside carries conveying members (5) for the solid material and is surrounded by a cylindrical constriction (16) attached to the housing. Within said cylinder there is a conical surface (11) which expands from the shaft (2) towards the mixing chamber (6). <IMAGE>

Description

(54) MIXING APPARATUS FOR MIXING A SOLID AND A LIQUID MATERIAL (71) We, MACHINEFABRIEK VOOR MOLENBOUW J. SCHIMMEL B.V., of Antwerpenweg 38014, Deventer, The Netherlands, a Dutch Company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to a mixing apparatus for mixing large quantities of solid material with pumpable material into a solid, preferably powdery or granular mass.
Such apparatus is needed e.g. for processing different types of flour with water, fat, oil, molasses or pastes or liquid materials. The end products are wanted preferably in granular or powdery form or at least in a form which can be packed in boxes, barrels, crates, paper or plastic sacks and other packing means, depending on the use of the product in question.
Although in certain cases e.g. kneading machines, Banbury mixers and the like can be used for this purpose, a kneading action is usually not desirable and also the energy consumption is high.
According to the present invention, there is provided mixing apparatus for mixing together solids and liquids, comprising a cylindrical housing, a rotatable shaft mounted therein co-axial with the axis of the housing, which shaft has an internal chamber at one end thereof communicating with the surface of the shaft via radial channels, a cylindrical feed member mounted on the shaft inside the housing and at one end thereof for rotation with the shaft and having an internal conical surface disposed around the lateral channels in the shaft, which surface is divergent towards the housing, the cylindrical feed member having means on its external periphery cooperating with an adjacent cylindrical housing portion for conveying solid material into the housing, the mixer including mixing blades mounted on the shaft.
The invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows in section the supply side of a mixer according to the invention; and Figure 2 shows in section the product discharge side.
The housing 1 is of mild steel, high-grade steel or synthetic material and has,the shape of a cylinder in which a rotating shaft 2 is provided centrally, which is driven e.g. at 3.
The solid material is supplied in finely divided form at 4 at the left hand end of the cylinder 1, where a cylindrical rotor 13 is provided, which at its outer circumference has paddles or a helical ribbon or other propulsion means 5, which convey the solid material to the space 6 within the housing 1.
The cylindrical rotor 13 is surrounded by a cylindrical wall 16 provided in the casing, and an aperture is provided in the wall 16 for the solid material inlet.
Liquid is introduced into a chamber 14 in the shaft 2 at 7. The chamber may have a loaded valve (not shown) which can close itself when the machine is at standstill to prevent liquid from flowing into the supply space for the solid material.
The chamber provided in the end of the shaft 2 opens at 12 into a number of radial channels. Within the rotor 13 there is a conical surface 11, which rotates with the shaft 2 and against which the liquid flowing out at 12 collides. The liquid is then transported by centrifugal force towards the space 6. At the end of the cone the liquid meets the flow of solid material. At 15 the liquid leaves the cone to engage with the flow of solid material 4. The liquid forms a radially inner thin coating on the solid material, whereafter the solid material and the liquid travel as a thin-walled cylinder into the space 6 and are intimately mixed there by means of stirrer means provided on the shaft 2.
The stirrer means are preferably arms or paddles 18, secured to the shaft by means of bolts passing through the shaft 2. If so desired, the arms can be mounted obliquely on the shaft. Blades 19 can be mounted on the arms by means of bolts 17. The direction and speed of flow of material can be changed by adjusting the disposition of the arms and blades, so that at wish concentrations can be formed, which are exposed longer to the action of the distributing means.
The recessed end of the shaft 2 is bearingmounted and also sealed by seals 8, 9 at the end.
It may be advantageous to preheat one or both components or also to bring the mixing space to a higher temperature. For the mixing space this can be effected by providing electric wiring or by making the space double-walled and passing a heating medium such as hot water or steam between the walls in order to reach the desired temperature. Similar measures can be used if the temperature in the mixer is to be lowered.
