Abstract
The insecticidal products based on pyrethrins, pyrethrinoids and rotenones paralyse the insect to be destroyed only momentarily. Organochlorine compounds, organophosphates or alkaloids are therefore generally added thereto. But these added products increase the very low toxicity of pyrethrins, pyrethrinoids and rotenones. The organochlorine compounds, organophosphates and alkaloids have therefore been replaced by dimethylformamide. In the control of insects such as lice, a formulation is used containing dimethylformamide in a proportion of about half; in the control of pests living in stables, the formulation may contain up to 90% dimethylformamide.
Description
(54) INSECTICIDAL AND ANTI-PARASITIC PREPARATIONS
(71) I ANDRE LE GROUYELLEC, a citizen of France, of Le Vialgoët-BP 10 56390 Grandchamp, France do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
The present invention relates to insecticidal and anti-parasitic preparations with a base of pyrethrins, pyrethrinoids and for natural or synthetic rotenones.
Pyrethrins, pyrethrinoids and natural or synthetic rotenone are advantageous in being efficacious in preparations for the elimination of insects, batachians, molluscs, crustaceans and fish, etc., that is, any coldblooded animal. They are usually used in proportions of 0.2 to 0.5 per cent with synergists.
Pyrethrins and pyrethrinoids have the disadvantage of only paralysing insects for a more or less short time, which can vary between a few minutes and several hours.
However, when the period exceeds 6 hours, the insect dies.
The disadvantage of mere temporary paralysis can be remedied by introducing in the preparation other natural or synthetic insecticides, for example, organochlorines, organophosphors or alkaloids, in variable proportions. However, this results in the primary property of the pyrethrins and pyrethrinoids, which is the very low toxicity of the preparations to warm-blooded species, becoming diminished by the addition of toxic substances. The non-polluting property of the product of pyrethrins and pyrethrinoids is, therefore, affected.
An object of the present invention is to minimise the above-mentioned disadvantage without altering the non-polluting property of the product of pyrethrins, pyrethrinoids and natural or synthetic rotenones.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided an insecticidal and antiparasitic preparation with a base of pyrethrins, pyrethrinoids and/or natural or synthetic rotenones, which includes, in addition, dimethylformamide.
It has, in fact, been ascertained experimentally that the addition of the dimethylformamide to the pyrethrins and pyret hrinoids considerably increases insect mortality and improves the permanence of the preparation. However, it has also been ascertained that a preparation with a basc of pyrethrins or pyrethrinoids or rotenones containing dimethylformamide retains the harmless (in the amounts normally used) property of the product towards warmblooded species.
In use, insect mortality is increased by the fact that the molecules of dimethylformamide are conveyed with the insecticide molecules into the blood of an insect and, as soon as the molecules of dimethylformamide are inside its cardiac muscle, they stop the latter functioning. Thus, the combined action of the insecticide and the dimethylformamide increases the speed of the "knock down" action and the insect is more rapidly knocked-out.
In particular, experiments carried out on parasites, such as lice, have shown a preparation which contains, in the proportion of substantially one half, an insecticide consisting of pyrethrins, pyrethrinoids and/or rotenones and, in the proportion of substantially one half, dimethylformamide to be very effective without being otherwise injurious.
Other experiments have shown a preparation containing 10% insecticide and 90% dimethylformamide to be very effective against insects commonly encountered in stables.
It should, moreover, be noted that the dimethylformamide increases the solubility of the pyrethrins and pyrethrinoids in many solvents, which permits the proportion of these last to be reduced in the fluid transporting the insecticide for the purpose of its use by vapourization, etc.
The values of the proportions given in this specification and claims are by weight.
It will be understood that although a particular example is given in the specification the invention is not limited thereto and that variations and modifications can be made within the scope of the appended claims.
WHEAT I CLAIM IS:
1. An insecticidal and anti-parasitic preparation having a base of pyrethrins, pyrcthrinoids and/or natural or synthetic rotenones, further including dimethylformamide.
2. An insecticidal and anti-parasitic preparation according to claim 1 , which is especially effective against parasites, such as licc, wherein the dimcthylformamide is in the proportion of approximately one half of the preparation.
3. An insecticidal and anti-parasitic preparation according to claim I , which is especially effective against the insects which frequent stables, wherein the dimethylformamide is in the proportion of approximately 90(3S, of the preparation.
4. An insecticidal and anti-parasitic preparation as claimed in claim l substantially as described herein with reference to the example given.
