Description

(54) BAG (54) BAG (71) We, TATE t LYLE LIMITED, of Sugar Quay, Lower Thames Street, London EC3R 6DQ, a British Company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to bags for use in transporting commodities.
According to the present invention we provide a bag of at least 1 cubic yard capacity for transport of commodities. The bag has an endless length of webbing secured thereto such that the webbing forms two slings passing under the bag and provides two loops by means of which the bag may be mechanically lifted. The bag also has a closable outlet in its base.
A perspective view of a bag embodying the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawing.
The bag 10 shown in the drawing is a 1500Kg S.W.L. ('safe working load') bag for transport of 1000 Kg quantities. It is made of woven polypropylene and is of size 3 foot by 3 foot by 5 foot 9 inches. An endless length of 2 tonne S.W.L. nylon webbing 11 is sewn to the bag 10 and forms two slings 12 passing under the bag and two loops 13 which as shown may be used for mechanically lifting the bag. When the bag 10 is to be used for transhipment of commodities intended for human consumption, or for other commodities which are to be kept free from contamination, an inner bag or envelope e.g. of polyethylene is fitted in the bag 10.
An outlet in the form of a 12 inch diameter shute 14 is fitted to the bottom of the bag 10 and has a drawstring 15 by means of which the opening of the outlet 14 is controlled. Release of the drawstring (as shown in the drawing) and rupture of any inner lining gives discharge of the commodity in the bag.
The bag 10 provided by the invention avoids the need for individual bagging of commodities during transhipment, and thereby reduces filling, handling and discharge times previously required. It is suitable for re-use and typically might be used for five transhipments before being discarded.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A bag of at least 1 cubic yard capacity for transport of commodities, the bag having an endless length of webbing secured thereto such that the webbing forms two slings passing under the bag and provides two loops by means of which the bag may be mechanically lifted, and the bag having a closable outlet in its base.
2. A bag as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the outlet is a shute with drawstring.
3. A bag as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 when fitted with an inner lining.
4. A bag of at least 1 cubic yard capacity for transport of commodities, the bag being substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
