Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CONTAINERS
(71) We, DUNLOP LIMITED, an English Company of Dunlop House, Ryder Street,
St. James's, London S.W.1, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to containers, particularly to containers for chemically reactive fluid materials.
There are many industrial and household chemically reactive mixtures such as adhesives, sealants, filling materials, insulating materials and surface coating compositions, wherein the two or more reactive components of the mixture are packed separately to avoid premature reaction and must be dispensed and mixed by the user. In order to obtain the best results from such mixtures it is usually desirable that the components should be dispensed in a specific ratio of amounts, but the dispensation of these specific amounts is often difficult for the user to judge and achieve. A container which may be used to facilitate the accurate dispensation of reactive components is now proposed.
According to the present invention a container suitable for storing separately at least two components of a composition is provided with first and second apertures and contains a flexible sack wherein part of the sack projects externally of the container through said first aperture the dimensions of which are such that the sack can be pulled through the aperture when the sack is substantially empty but not otherwise, and another part of the sack, remote from the first part, projects externally of the container through said second aperture, the portion projecting through said second aperture having an opening sealed by a removable closure means externally of the container.
The sack may be used to contain a predetermined amount of one of the reactive components of a mixture, the other component (or components) being contained in a predetermined amount in at least one other sack or loosely in the container.
At the part of the sack which projects through the second aperture is a closure means e.g.
a removable clip so that part of the sack can be opened other than as a result of the pressure created when the sack is pulled through the first aperture. The sack is capable of being opened by means of an operation from outside the container, for example the closure means can be removed from outside the container and the projecting opened portion of the sack can then be pushed or allowed to fall inside the container.
The part of the sack which projects through the first aperture may be adapted to facilitate gripping it and pulling it. For example it may have a ring or tab of for example plastics or metal which can be gripped from outside the container.
Preferably the container has a removable lid. The apertures are preferably in the lid or in the container wall near the top of the container. The first aperture, through which the sack is to be pulled, is suitably a narrow slit. The first aperture may be of such dimensions in relation to the sack dimensions that the appropriate quantity of the component contained in the sack is discharged from the sack when it is pulled through the aperture. The sack should be constructed so that it will not rupture, as it is being pulled through the first aperture. A suitable sack material is polyethylene.
If desired more than one such sack may be present to accommodate more than one component of the mixture. Each sack may have its own corresponding apertures or it may share an aperture or apertures with another sack. One of the components of the mixture may be loose in the container, in which case the sack may be positioned out of contact of the loose component. Preferably the container is large enough to act as a mixing bowl for the components when the sack contents have been expelled into it. The container is preferably relatively rigid, a suitable material being, for example, plastics or metal.
When the mixture components are contained in the sacks) and container, the container may be hermetically sealed, for example by means of metal foil adhered over the aperture or apertures so that it can be removed for access to pull the sack.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
A metal can 1 has a lid 2 which has two slit apertures 3 and 4. A flexible tubular polyethylene sack 5 containing a reactive component A projects through the apertures at each end of the tube. One end of the tube has a slit opening which is sealed by means of a spring clip 6 and the other end of the tube has a gripping ring 7. A metal foil 8 is adhered over the apertures, clip and gripping ring. The other reactive component B is contained loose in the can. When the contents are required for use, the metal foil is stripped off, the spring clip is removed, the open end of the sack is pushed inside the container, the sack is pulled through the slit aperture by means of the gripping ring to expel component A into contact with component B, the lid is removed, the components are thoroughly mixed and the mixture is applied.
Three applications of this invention are
(i) for containing a two-component polyurethane composition for uses such as sealing or packing around joints in pipes such as gas pipes; (ii) for containing a two-component polychloroprene adhesive composition such as one based on a curable polychloroprene and an isocyanate curing agent;
(iii) for containing a two-component polyester composition such as one in which one component comprises an unsaturated polyester and styrene and the other component comprises a hardener in the form of a polymerisation catalyst such as a peroxide or an amine, the product suitable for uses such as filling, adhering and surface coating.
It is found that the quantity of the component discharged from the sack when it is pulled through the aperture in the container of the invention is generally substantially constant for all identical containers.

1. A container, suitable for storing separately at least two components of a composition, which is provided with first and second apertures and contains a flexible sack wherein part of the sack projects externally of the container through said first aperture the dimensions of which are such that the sack can be pulled through the aperture when the sack is substantially empty but not otherwise, and another part of the sack remote:from the first part projects externally of the container through said second aperture, the portion projecting through said second aperture having an opening sealed by a removable closure means externally of the container.
