Abstract

159,095. Bruhn, F. W. G. Feb. 24, 1920. Rodler-and-sheet recording- apparatus; driving-means.-In apparatus for recording the speed and movements of vehicles, such as locomotives, wherein a recording point is moved over a paper strip by a speed indicator of the periodic counter type and depressed thereon at given intervals of distance, the strip is moved by the vehicle at or above a given minimum speed and by a vehicle-wound clock below this speed. Movement from the vehicle is communicated through changeable gearing to a shaft 6, a unidirectional drive being interposed. Driven from the shaft 6 by worm gearing is a shaft 20 bearing a pinion 22 driving a wheel 23 on a shaft 25 to which one end of a spiral spring is secured, the other end being in frictional engagement with a barrel 24 governed by an escapement 41. Carried respectively by the barrel 24 and the shaft 25 are pinions 27, 26 driving gear wheels 29, 30 bearing pawls engaging a fine-toothed ratchet wheel 31. Secured to the shaft 28 of the wheel 31 is a wheel 34 driving the record strip through a roller 39. Movement of a wheel 43 driven from the speed indicator is communicated to a circular rack 44 bearing a recording arm 48 and sliding on and connected to a shaft 45 by a pin and slot. The recording point is normally held away from the strip by a weak spring 45<a> and is depressed by a star wheel 51 on the vehicle-driven shaft 20 through a spring-pressed pivoted arm 50 engaging an arm 50a on the shaft 45. Situated below the recording point 47 and underneath the record strip is a rod 55 into a slot in which the point is forced. The record strip is preferably made of tracing paper.
