Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO SLIDING SPRING CLIPS (71) We, R. & H. WALE (FIBREBOARD PRODUCTS) LIMITED, a British Company, of Gamlingay, Sandy, Bedfordshire SGl9 3LB, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to the attachment of fibre-board boxes to pallets for fork-lift trucks and to sliding spring clips for use in such assemblies.
Sliding spring clips consisting essentially of u-shaped members with retroverted teeth on their limbs are well known for use in the attachment of objects to other objects.
However, as the retroverted teeth, which point backwards towards the closed end of the clip, are intended to prevent withdrawal of the clip from its operative position, such clips are used for permanently securing the objects together.
The present invention is based on the discovery that such a clip, if properly designed for the purpose, is very suitable as a specific temporary retainer device where any damage done by the withdrawal of the clip from its retaining position is of little or no consequence.
According to the invention an assembly comprises a pallet for a fork-lift truck, a fibreboard box mounted on the platform portion of the pallet and detachable spring clips securing the box to the pallet, each spring clip being a u-shaped member having flat limbs and at least one retroverted tooth on at least one of the limbs, an upper one of the limbs being inserted between the base of the box and a lower edge of the box wall with the other limb gripping beneath the platform portion of the pallet, and the tooth or teeth serving to inhibit accidental detachment of the clip. It is preferable to make the upper limb longer than the lower limb. Then the longer limb can be inserted between the base and the side wall of the box so as to locate the clip firmly before being thrust or struck so as to drive it home to its fitted position.
The invention further comprises a spring clip for use in the aforesaid assembly, the clip consisting of a U-shaped member with flat planar limbs which have no external projections and which converge towards their free ends so that they have to be forced further apart on being mounted in the assembly, at least one tooth being formed on at least one of the limbs so that it points inwards towards the other limb and backwards towards the closed end of the clip, and one of the limbs being longer than the other.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect a clip in accordance therewith will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a prior art arrangement of a packed box ready for transit on a pallet; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a corner of a box and pallet with the clip in position for fitting; Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the clip in the fitted position; Figures 4 and 5 are a plan and side elevation of the clip; and Figure 6 is a plan of a detail.
In the prior art arrangement of Figure 1, a packed fibreboard box 1, which has been folded up from a flat state, is secured to a wooden fork-lift pallet 2 by metal straps 3 that pass under top longitudinal members 4 of the pallet. Such straps take time to fit and cannot be used to secure the box to the pallet while loading is taking place.
According to the invention, the straps 3 are replaced by clips 5. In the example shown in the drawings, each clip 5 is of spring steel and has one limb 6 longer than the other limb 7, the clip having been formed into a U-shape from a flat strip. Triangular retroverted teeth 8 are punched out of each limb and, prior to fitting, the two limbs converge as shown in Figure 5. The longer limb 6 has a lip 12 that, prior to fitting, can be inserted between a base panel 9 of the box and a side panel 10 that is not joined to the base panel.
The clip is then ready for fitting as shown in Figure 2. Next, the clip is driven home as shown in Figure 3, gripping between its limbs the base panel 9 of the box and a transverse member 11 of the platform portion of the pallet on which the box is mounted. The retroverted teeth 8 prevent the clip from working loose or being easily withdrawn.
The precise shape of the clip referred to in this example is shown in Figures 4 to 6.
In this specific example, the length of the longer limb is 120mm and the height of the flat base of the clip is 42mm.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. As assembly comprising a pallet for a fork-lift truck, a fibreboard box mounted on the platform portion of the pallet and detachable spring clips securing the box to the pallet, each spring clip being a U-shaped member having flat limbs and at least one retroverted tooth on at least one of the limbs, an upper one of the limbs being inserted between the base of the box and a lower edge of the box wall with the other limb gripping beneath the platform portion of the pallet, and the tooth or teeth serving to inhibit accidental detachment of the clip.
2. An assembly according to Claim 1, in which the upper limb is longer than the lower limb.
3. An assembly according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which retroverted teeth are formed on both limbs.
4. For use in an assembly according to Claim 1 a sliding spring clip consisting of a U-shaped member with flat planar limbs which have no external projections and which converge towards their free ends so that they have to be forced further apart on being mounted in the assembly, at least one tooth being formed on at least one of the limbs so that it points inwards towards the other limb and backwards towards the closed end of the clip, and one of the limbs being longer than the other.
5. For use in an assembly according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, a sliding spring clip substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 4 to 6 of the accompanying drawings.

Claims (5)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
