Description
(54) ARTICULATED CONNECTOR FOR USE WITH
ANGLING EQUIPMENT
(71) We, C. B. FROST AND COMPANY
LIMITED, a British Company of Green Street,
Digbeth, Birmingham B12 ONE (formerly
of Vesey Street, Birmingham B4 6JS.), hereby declare this invention to be described in the following statement:- This invention relates to connectors for use with angling equipment of the kind which comprises a sectional stem which is assembled by interengaging male and female threaded parts of a screwed joint, for example the stem of a keep or landing net, umbrella etc.
The object of the invention is to provide a connector which enables the stem to be articulated by providing a hinged joint between the sections, and which is of neat and simple construction and effective and reliable in use.
According to the invention there is provided an articulated connector for use with angling equipment of the kind described above and comprising first and second elements having respective female and male threaded parts for interconnecting the stem sections, and an angularly adjustable joint between the elements having interengaging uniform and complementary teeth on each element and a clamping scrw for selectively holding said teeth in engagement whereby the use of the connector enables the stem sections to be articulated about a transverse axis to a selected angle and secured positively at the chosen position.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is now more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an articulated connector with its elements
secured at right angles to each other;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of said connector;
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure
2; and
Figure 4 is an end elevation viewed in
the direction of arrows 4 on Figure 2.
The connector comprises two moulded
plastics (e.g. matt black polyethylene) ele
ments 11, 12 provided respectively with a female threaded metal insert 13 and a male threaded metal spigot 14 which can be screw connected with the standard i inch BSF thread of the stem sections of a keep net or other angling equipment having this type of stem. The parts of the metal insert and spigot 13, 14 around which the plastics is moulded are knurled or splined to resist rotation or accidental displacement.
Respective end portions 15, 16 of elements 11, 12 remote from insert 13 and spigot 14 are shaped to provide an articulated joint for selective annular adjustment about a transverse axis. A mating annular face of each end portion 15, 16 lying generally on a longitudinal median plane of the accessory is provided with a respective set of interengaging uniform and complementary radial teeth. Each tooth is some 30 in extent so that adjustment can be effected by increments of that angle through a range of about 1800 and the teeth have sloping or angled side faces enabling them to ride over each other during adjustment in an unclamped condition.
A hexagon-headed bolt 18 is located in a through bore on the axis of the joint to serve as a hinge pin and clamp screw, its head being located in a mating recess in end portion 15, and a wing nut 17 is in threaded engagement with the bolt for clamping the joint at the selected angle.
The outer end of element 11 is provided with an integrally moulded plastics collar 19 forming an axially formable retaining formation projecting axially beyond the associated insert 13. The outer periphery of collar 19 has a reduced diameter neck and then diverges outwardly to form a flange, while the inside of the collar comprises a cylindrical bore of larger diameter than the root diameter of the threads of insert 13 and extending into the region of the neck, and a divergent outer part so that the flange is cone shaped. Flange 19 will abut an end face of the stem section as the male thread of the latter is screwed home into element 11 to give a "soft" threaded connection as the flange can compress axially during tightening. This permits selective adjustment of the angular relationship of the keep net etc and its stem section about the longitudinal axis of the latter so that the mouth of the net, for example, can be kept horizontal while allowing the stem section to be screwed sufficiently tightly into element 11 to secure it firmly with the hinge axis of the connector at the angular relationship needed to permit articulation in the required direction.
Intermediate portions of elements 11, 12 are hollowed on each side to an I section (Figure 3) to lighten the moulding, and the elements have four convex side faces merging at rounded corners for neat appearance and to facilitate gripping in the hand for screwing or unscrewing the assembly of stem portions and connectors.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. An articulated connector for use with angling equipment of the kind described and comprising first and second elements having respective female and male threaded parts for interconnecting the stem sections, and an angularly adjustable joint between the elements having interengaging uniform and complementary teeth on each element and a clamping screw for selectively holding said teeth in engagement whereby the use of the connector enables the stem sections to be articulatd about a transverse axis to a selected angle and secured positively at the chosen position.
2. A connector according to Claim I in which the teeth have sloping or angled side faces enabling them to ride over each other when the connector is in an unclamped condition.
3. A connector according to Claim 1 or 2 wherein the extent of each tooth is substantially 30".
4. A connector according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said elements are formed from plastics material.
5. A connector according to Claim 4 wherein the threaded parts of the elements are metal inserts.
6. A connector according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the outer end of one element is provided with an axially deformable retaining formation which will compress as a stem section is screw home.
7. A connector according to Claim 6 wherein said retaining formation is a collar of plastics material having a cone shaped flange at its outer end.
8. An articulated connector substantially as hercinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
