Description
(54) SHEATHING MATERIAL FOR INSULATING A PIPE OR PIPE FITTING
(71) I, HOWARD JOHN COSTELLO, a
British Subject, of 28 Lyme Road Disley, Cheshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to sheathing material for insulating a pipe or pipe fitting.
When pipework has to be lagged after installation it can be effected by plastering on a settable material including insulating material such as asbestos or glass fibres, smoothing and then painting. Such a process is very expensive and the insulation cannot be easily removed. A second known way of insulating pipework consists of applying hollow semi-cylinders of insulation to the pipe and fastening them together with straps or binding. In many cases the actual insulating material is not sufficiently strong to withstand wear and either deterioration thereof takes place, or a relatively expensive surface covering has to be applied subsequently.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved sheathing material and accordingly the invention provides sheathing material in the form of a layer of insulating material
C-shaped in cross-section and bonded to an outer shell of plastics material of whose free edges one has at least one groove formation and the other has at least one complementory tongue formation so that a pair of lengths of such material can be interconnected by means of the formations at the free edges of their shells to embrace a pipe or pipe fitting and provide protected insulation therefor. Advantageously the shell is of rigid plastics material. Preferably the tongue and groove formations can engage with a snap-action.
For use on pipes the material will normally consist of hollow semi-cylindrical pieces, a pair being secured one on each side of the pipe. For flanged joints, valves, junctions and other fittings, more complicated shapes will be necessary.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment it being understood that the following description is illustrative and not limitative of the scope of the invention. In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an exploded perspective view of a preferred sheathing material of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse cross-sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the material of Fig. 1 assembled; and
Fig. 3 is a still further enlarged detail of
Fig. 2.
A preferred insulating material 10 of the invention comprises a hollow semi-cylindrical layer of insulation 11 of C-shaped crosssection bonded inside a protective semicylindrical rigid shell 12 moulded from polethylene or polystyrene. Along one edge the shell 12 has a tongue 13 and along the other edge has a complementary groove 14. The tongue 13 and groove 14 are stepped at 15 (Fig. 3) to ensure that they can engage with a snap action.
In use, a pair of lengths of the above material 10 are disposed about a length of pipe (not shown) the tongue 13 of one engaging the groove 14 of the other and vice verso, and being snapped together to give a protectively finished aesthetically pleasing, and easily removed insulation to the pipe. Each pair of lengths 10 will butt against an adjacent pair and the joint can be taped if desired.
For surrounding flanged joints the shapes of the insulation layer and the shell will, of course, be varied but will retain their overall C-shaped cross section. The ends of a pair of pieces around a flanged joint will, of course, be of the same diameter to the ends of the aforedescribed pairs. Similar snap fastening tongues and grooves will be provided.
Similarly, a wide range of complementary pairs of pieces, all compatible will be provided for valves, bends and junctions.
The invention is not limited to the precise details of the foregoing and variations can be made thereto. For example when such insulating material is "designed into" pipework, it is advantageous if the pipes are hung from hangers which are of solid plastics material and surround the pipes, the inner diameter of the hangers being the same as the outer-diameter of a pair of pieces of the insulating material and shaped complementarily.
For high temperatures the insulation 11 may include glass-fibre adhered to the shell 12. For lower temperatures the insulation 11 can be a layer of foamed plastics material extruded to fit the shell 12, shortly after extrusion of the shell 12 itself and chemically bonded thereto.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. Sheathing material in the form of a layer of insulating material C-shaped in cross-section and bonded to an outer shell of plastics material of whose free edges one has at least one groove formation and the other has at least one complementary tongue formation so that a pair of lengths of such material can be interconnected by means of the formations at the free edges of their shells to embrace a pipe or pipe fitting and provide protected insulation therefor.
2. Material as claimed in Claim 1, wherein formations of a pair of lengths of the material can unite with a snap action.
3. Material as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the tongue and groove formations are provided at intervals along the free edges of the shells.
4. Material as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the shells are extruded from plastics material.
5. Material as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the insulating layer is of glassfibre adhered to the shell.
6. Material as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the insulating layer is of foamed plastics material.
7. Material as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the foamed plastics material is extruded onto the shell to bond therewith.
8. Sheathing material substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
