Description
(54) METHOD OF PREPARING A POLYPROPYLENE ENDLESS LOOP
AND THE PRODUCT OBTAINED THEREBY
(71) 1, SPENCER BING-TANG LIN. of No.12-3. Lane 2, Suei-Duei-Tze. Tamsui,
Taipei, Taiwan, a citizen of Taiwan. do hereby declare the invention for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me. and the method by which it is to be performed. to be particularly described in and by the following statement:-
This invention relates to a method of preparing a polypropylene endless loop and to the product obtained thereby.
Polypropylene ropes. cords, strands and the like have been widely used for packaging purposes, but there has been no previous disclosure or use of polypropylene endless loops.
The present invention in one aspect provides a method of preparing a polypropylene endless loop comprising blow-moulding polypropylene raw material into a tubular sheet, transversely drawing the said sheet with a draw ratio of at least 4. cutting or slitting the said sheet transverse to the axis of the original tubular sheet. before or after the said drawing step, to form a plurality of individual endless sheets. and twisting a said sheet after drawing and cutting or slitting to form an endless loop.
The invention in another aspect provides a polypropylene endless loop prepared by the method according to the invention and having a transverse length of the drawn endless sheet of from 7.5 to 35cm with a tensile load at break of the endless loop of at least 6 kgs.
The blow-moulding of the polypropylene is carried out by a known technique with a conventional blow-moulding machine. but the moulded polypropylene tubular sheet, for providing the desired finished loop, should preferably have dimensions of 15 to 50mm, more preferably 2() to 30mm. in transverse length, and 0.()3 to 0.1mum, preferably ().05 to 0.()6 mm, in thickness The term "transverse length" used herein as defined as the length measured transversely. i.e. along the radial direction of the tubular sheet, at one side of the drawn endless sheet. The term "endless sheet" used herein as defined as the tubular sheet folded to become a flat sheet material having two superimposed layers in close contact with each other.
When the cutting step is carried out before the drawing step, the tubular sheet is preferably cut at a longitudinal distance of from 1() to 6() mm. more preferably 25 to 35 mm, to form individual endless sheets. Accordingly, this distance becomes the width of the resulting endless sheet, and upon transverse drawing this width will be slightly decreased.
Upon transverse drawing. a force is applied to the endless sheet along the transverse direction which is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction with respect to the original tubular sheet, with a draw ratio at least 4, and preferably from 5 to 7. The term "draw ratio" used herein denotes the ratio of the transverse length of the sheet after drawing to the same before drawing. When the draw ratio is less than 4, the resulting endless loop has an insufficient tensile strength. while too great a draw ratio results in the sheet being broken due to drawing beyond its limit.
After drawing. the transverse length of the endless sheet will preferably be from 7.5 to 35 cm, preferably from 1() to 2() cm.
The transverse drawing may be carried out at ambient temperature or at elevated temperature which is preferably up to 4U0C.
The drawn endless sheet so obtained is further twisted in any convenient manner to become the desired endless loop.
In general. a polypropylene endless loop for packaging should bear a weight of about 1 to 5 kilograms, and the tests carried out in the following examples show that the tensile load at break of the endless loop is greater than 8 kgs.
The invention will therefore be further described with reference to the following illustrative Examples.
Example I
A blow-moulded polypropylene tubular sheet 25 mm in transverse length and 0.055 mm in thickness was cut into endless sheets at a longitudinal distance of 35 mm. After drawing to a suitable extent. the transverse length was measured as shown in Table 1. The width of the individual endless sheet after drawing was in the range of 25 to 26 mm. Finally. the endless sheet was twisted to form an endless loop and subjected to tensile testing. the tensile load obtained being given in Table 1.

It is apparent from Table 3 that when a sheet with a thickness of 0.055 mm is cut at a longitudinal distance of 25 mm, i.e. to obtain individual endless sheets with a width of 25 mm, then the tensile strength after drawing is less satisfactory. Therefore. it is preferable to employ thicker polypropylene tubular sheet or a wider endless sheet to give a more satisfactorv tensile load.
