Description

(54) A MOUNTING MEMBER FOR THE END OF A CABLE (71) We, BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, a German Body Corporate, of BMW-Haus, Petuelring 130, 8 München 40, German Federal Republic, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to a mounting member for connecting the end of a cable, for example a Bowden cable, to a lever or other part.
Lever and cable assemblies are often employed in which one end of a cable is connected to a lever, and the lever is pivotable to operate the cable, or instead the lever is pivoted by movement of the cable. If the cable is connected rigidly to the lever, the cable life is shortened because during pivoting of the lever the cable bends adjacent its point of connection to the lever. For this reason it is desirable to mount an end fitting of the cable so that it can pivot as the lever pivots, thus avoiding bending of the cable.
Various attempts have been made to provide a satisfactory mounting member which is to be connected to the lever for pivotally mounting the end fitting. One such mounting member is described in U.K. Patent No.
1,235,447, the mounting member being made of a synthetic plastics material and having a sharp edge on which the cable end fitting rocks, thus giving very low friction. However, with sharp-edge bearings or synthetic plastics material there is the risk of rapid wear, especially if the cable is to transmit relatively large forces and if the mounting member consists of a synthetic plastics material which enables it to be fastened to the lever or other part by moulded-on resilient projecting members, i.e. is relatively soft or elastic.
An aim of the present invention is to provide a mounting member for a cable end fitting, which mounting member will not wear rapidly even when subject to relatively large forces, and accordingly the invention is directed to a synthetic plastics material mounting member for the pivotable mounting of a cable end fitting, which mounting member is to be inserted in an opening in a lever or other part with a contact-making surface on the mounting member engaging the lever or other part to bear the cable load, in which the mounting member has a cylindrical bearing bore which is to receive a said cable end fitting for pivotally mounting the same, the mounting member having a first slot which extends from the outer surfaces of the mounting member to the bearing bore in a plane normal to the central axis thereof for the passage of a cable connected to the end fitting, the first slot serving to accommodate movement of the cable suring pivoting of its end fitting in the bore, the bearing member also having a second slot communicating with the first slot permitting introduction of the cable into the first slot, the second slot extending in a plane containing the central axis and being generally parallel to the contact making surface.
In this way a mounting member in accordance with the invention is provided with a relatively large bearing surface area for the cable end fitting, and if a self-lubricating synthetic plastics material is used for the retaining part, a sound bearing for the cable end fitting is obtained.
An example of a mounting member in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows a side-elevation of a retaining part for the mounting of a cable end fitting of a cable line; Figure 2 shows a plan view on to the retaining part of Figure 1; and Figure 3 shows a section taken along the line Ill-Ill in Figure 1.
The mounting member 1 is made of a synthetic plastics material and has a bearing bore 2 and a slot 3 perpendicular thereto. In Figures 1 and 2 the member 1 is inserted in a rectangular opening 4 of an operating part 5 illustrated in dot-dash fashion. In Figure 1 the end of a cable 6 of a cable line with a cable end fitting 7 inserted in the bearing bore 2 is illustrated, likewise in dot-dash fashion.
A limb 8 having a projecting member 9 on its outer longitudinal side is arranged on both sides parallel to and spaced away from the slot 3. The projecting members 9 secure the member I that is inserted in the opening 4 and rests against the operating part 5 by way of a contact-making surface 10 that is parallel to the bearing bore 2 and bears the cable load. The slot 3 extends from the outer surface of the mounting member to the bearing bore in a plane normal to the central axis of the bore 2. A slot 11 for introducing the cable into slot 3 is arranged at right angles to the slot 3 parallel to the contactmaking surface 10 and radially to the bearing bore 2.
Assembly of the mounting member 1 together with the end of the cable line is effected by inserting the cable 6 through the opening 4 of the operating part 5 together with the cable end fitting 7. The member 1, turned anti-clockwise through 90 from its position in Figure 1, is then pushed on to the cable end fitting 7, so that the end of the cable 6 is aligned with the inlet slot 11. After being pushed completely on to the cable end fitting 7, the member 1 is turned through 90 in a clockwise sense and is inserted in the opening 4 by means of its arms 8. On being completely inserted, the projecting members 9 lock in position on the other side of the operating part 5. The slot 3 serves to accomodate movement of the cable 6 when, in use, the end fitting 7 pivots in the bore 2.
The mounting member 1 makes possible a simple and rapid assembly of the end of the cable line and at the same time provides for a sound mounting of the cable end fitting 7 on the end of the cable line, thus avoiding a local bending of the cable 6 of the cable line at its entrance into the end fitting 7.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A synthetic plastics material mounting member for the pivotable mounting of a cable end fitting, which mounting member is to be inserted in an opening in a lever or other part with a contact-making surface on the mounting member engaging the lever or other part to bear the cable load, in which the mounting member has a cylindrical bearing bore which is to receive a said cable end fitting for pivotally mounting the same, the mounting member having a first slot which extends from the outer surface of the mounting member to the bearing bore in a plane normal to the central axis thereof for the passage of a cable connected to the end fitting, the first slot serving to accommodate movement of the cable during pivoting of its end fitting in the bore, the bearing member also having a second slot communicating with the first slot permitting introduction of the cable into the first slot, the second slot extending in a plane containing the central axis and being generally parallel to the contact making surface.
2. A mounting member substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
3. A lever a cable assembly in which the cable is mounted on the lever by a mounting member according to claim 1 or claim 2.
