Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO VEHICLE SUSPENSION UNITS (71) We, GIRLING LIMITED, a British Company, of Kings Road, Tyseley, Birmingham 11, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to vehicle telescopic suspension units.
Such units commonly comprise a liquid chamber and a gas chamber separated by a movable wall. Commonly, both the liquid and gas chambers are contained in a cylinder and separated by a free piston. A dampening piston works in the liquid chamber and is carried by a piston rod extending sealingly through one end of the cylinder. The cylinder and piston rod each have a mounting hole for attachment of the unit to the vehicle.
In certain vehicles, for example motorcycles, the lack of installation space available and the high operating temperatures preclude the use of the above-described units and it has been proposed to provide units having a shorter cylinder with an additional reservoir remote from the cylinder and attached thereto by flexible hoses.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a vehicle telescopic suspension unit having a cylinder within which a damping piston works, the piston being carried by a piston rod which extends sealingly through one end of a cylinder, mounting means at the other end of the cylinder for attachment of the cylinder to a vehicle, and a reservoir in fluid flow communication with the cylinder, wherein the mounting means is interposed between, and is rigidly attached to, the reservoir and the cylinder.
Preferably, the mounting means comprises a cap secured to the end of the cylinder and having a transverse aperture for receiving a mounting bolt. The mounting means preferably has one or more fluid flow passageways interconnecting the cylinder and the reservoir.
The reservoir may be a cylinder which contains a movable wall in the form of a sealingly slidable free piston.
A vehicle suspension unit in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is an axial section of part of the unit, and FIGURE 2 is a side view showing in section an arrangement for mounting the unit on a vehicle.
The unit comprises a cylinder 1 which usually contains liquid or a liquid/gas mixture and in which is slidable a damping piston attached to a piston rod extending through one end of the cylinder. The piston and rod are not illustrated.
To the other, illustrated end of the cylinder 1 is attached a cap 2 having a transverse aperture 3 which when the unit is mounted on a vehicle receives a mounting assembly 4 (Figure 2) for attachment of the cylinder to the vehicle.
A cylinder 5 defining an auxiliary reservoir is rigidly secured to the cap 2. A free piston 6 is sealingly slidable in the cylinder 5 and separate an upper chamber 7, which usually contains pressurised gas, commonly nitrogen, from a lower chamber 9 which communicates with the interior of cylinder 1 through longitudinally extending passageways 9 formed in the cap 2.
The above-described unit has the advantage that the cylinders 1, 5 and interposed cap 2 are all rigidly secured together and can be manufactured as a unit in a factory.
Furthermore, the suspension unit can be used when the distance between the vehicle mounting points is relatively small.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A vehicle telescopic suspension unit having a cylinder within which a damping piston works, the piston being carried by a piston rod which extends sealingly through one end of a cylinder, mounting means at the other end of the cylinder for attachment of the cylinder to a vehicle, and a reservoir in fluid flow communication with the cylinder, wherein the mounting means is interposed between, and is rigidly attached to, the reservoir and the cylinder.
