Description

(54) MOUNTING ASSEMBLY FOR A HINGE ARM OF A FURNITURE HINGE (71) We, PAUL HETTICH & Co., a German Kommanditgesellschaft, of: Vahrenkampstrasse 12-16, 4983 Kirchlengern 1, Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a mounting assembly for mounting a hinge arm of a furniture hinge on a furniture part. The assembly includes a housing, to which the hinge arm is attachable, having laterally extending portions with slotted holes therein for the passage therethrough of screws for securing the assembly to a furniture part. The housing has a first guide groove opening to the housing side to be secured to the furniture part, for receiving a shaped part. The axis of this guide groove is aligned beneath and with the common axis of the slotted holes, and the shaped part has a base plate which extends into the region of the slotted holes and which is provided in this region with axially bored pins which are radially expansible, by screws inserted in the bores, for securing the base plate and thus the assembly to a furniture part by insertion and expansion of the pins in holes in the furniture part.
A mounting assembly of this kind has been proposed in which the shaped part has a retaining head extending into a bore in the assembly housing which bore opens out upwardly of the housing, a breaking point being provided between the retaining head and the base plate. As long as there are no manufacturing discrepancies in the row of mounting holes in the furniture part, the shaped part of the proposed assembly is secured opposite the assembly by the retaining head. The centre-to-centre separation of the pins of the shaped part may correspond to the separation between the mounting holes of the row of mounting holes, so that the pins can be inserted into two holes of the row of holes and secured therein by way of spreading means, e.g. screws, which are engaged in the slotted holes of the assembly and screwed into the central bore of the respective pin.
However, in the event of manufacturing discrepancies in the row of mounting holes in the furniture part, the retaining head is separated from the base plate of the shaped part, by a tool, in the region of its breaking point, after the assembly has been secured to the furniture part by the pins, so that the assembly can be pushed into alignment opposite the shaped part The assembly is then secured by the screws, opposite the shaped part; these screws being passed through the slotted holes and screwed into the central bores of the pins. In this proposed assembly it is not possible to lock the shaped plate in its central position after the retaining head has been parted therefrom.
There is however a need for a mounting assembly in which the shaped part can be unlocked and displaced in the associated guide groove of the assembly, and after moving back into the central position, locked there once more into the same position. This facilitates the reassembly and realignment of a furniture door on a furniture unit which may have at least three hinges per door, by enabling the shaped part to be left in position on the furniture unit when the door and mounting assembly housing attached to the hinge are disassembled from the furniture unit.
Accordingly the present invention provides a mounting assembly for mounting a hinge arm of a furniture hinge on a furniture part, the assembly including a housing, to which the hinge arm is attachable, having laterally extending portions with slotted holes therein for the passage therethrough of screws for securing the assembly to a furniture part, which housing has a first guide groove for receiving a shaped part of the assembly and which first guide groove opens on to the side of the housing intended to be, when the assembly is secured to the furniture part, adjacent to that furniture part, and has a longitudinal axis aligned beneath the common axes of the slotted holes, the shaped part having a base plate dimensioned to extend into the region of the slotted holes and being provided with bored pins locatable in the region of the slotted holes, which pins are radially expansible, by screws inserted in the bores, for securing the base plate and thus the assembly to a furniture part by insertion and expansion of the pins in holes in the furniture part, the housing also having a second guide groove for receiving a bolt member of the assembly for releasably retaining the shaped part in a central position in the first guide groove, and the longitudinal axis of the second guide groove extending substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the first guide groove.
Preferably the bolt member has bar-like projections extending substantially at right angles to its longitudinal axis, which are engageable with window-like openings in the assembly housing and which are accessible from outside the housing by a tool. With this tool the bolt member can be moved axially into or out of retaining engagement with the shaped part.
Stop means may be provided between the bolt member and the assembly housing to retain the bolt member in or out of retaining engagement.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view from above of an assembly for a hinge arm of a furniture hinge, according to the invention with an inserted shaped part and a bolt member, Figure 2 is a bottom view of the assembly of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a perspective illustration of the assembly of Figures 1 and 2 with a disassembled shaped part and bolt member, Figure 4 is a plan view of the bolt member connected to the shaped part on an enlarged scale, Figure 5 is a plan view of the shaped part and the disconnected bolt member on an enlarged scale in the locked or retained central position.
As shown in the drawings, a mounting assembly 1 of the invention, preferably manufactured of metal, to which a hinge arm of a furniture hinge is attachable, includes a housing having laterally extending portions 2, with slotted holes 3 therein for the passage therethrough of screws (not illustrated) for securing the assembly to a furniture part. The portions 2 of the assembly housing extend laterally from a central portion 4 being substantially rectangular in plan view. This central portion 4 of the housing is provided with window-like openings 5.
In the region of the extended portions 2 the assembly housing has a first guide groove 7 (Figure 2) extending substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis 6, of the portion 4. This first guide groove opens on to the side of the housing intended, when the assembly is secured to the furniture part, to be adjacent to the furniture part, and extends across the central portion 4 of the assembly. The longitudinal axis of the first guide groove 7 is designated by reference numeral 8. A shaped part 9 of the assembly, preferably constructed of plastics, is inserted in this first guide groove 7.
This shaped part 3 has a base plate 11 with bored pins 10 (Figure 1) locatable in the region of the slotted holes 3. These pins 10 are radially expansible by screws (not shown) inserted in the bores via the slotted holes 3, for securing the base plate 11 and thus the assembly to a furniture part, by insertion and expansion of the pins in holes in the furniture part.
The base plate 11 (Figure 3) of the shaped part 9 is provided with a stop projection 12 for releasable engagement with a stop recess 13 in a bolt member 14. The member 14 is axially displaceable into and out of retaining engagement with the shaped part 9, to retain the latter in its central locked position as shown in Figure 5. The member 14 is displaceably mounted in a second guide groove 15 having a longitudinal axis extending substantially at right angles to the axis 8 of the guide groove 7.
So that the bolt member 14 can be operated from outside the assembly, it is provided with bar-like projections 16 extending substantially at right angles to its longitudinal axis, which engage with the window-like openings 5 in the assembly housing and as can be seen from Figure 1, can be moved from outside the housing by a tool to displace the bolt member 14 axially into and out of retaining engagement with the shaped part.
The bolt member 14 illustrated in Figure 2 is provided with a stop cam 17 on each longitudinal edge, with which are associated corresponding stop recesses 18 and 19 in the assembly housing. The cams 17 engage the stop recesses 19 to retain the member 14 out of engagement with the shaped part 9 whilst the stop cams 17 engage the recesses 1 8 to retain the member 14 in engagement with the shaped part 9 in the central position.
As can be seen from Figures 3 and 4, the shaped part 9 and the bolt member 14 may be manufactured in one piece. Between the part 9 and the member 14 there is only a very small connecting region wherein the bolt member 14 can be separated in a simple manner from the shaped part 9.
The shaped part 9 is similarly provided with at least one stop cam 20, which engages with a third guide groove in the assembly housing extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the groove 7. With stop cam 20 the shaped part 9 and the bolt member 14 can be held in the assembly housing without the risk of their falling out.
