Description

(54) AN IMPROVED CABLE SECURING DEVICE (71) We, BICC LIMITED, a British Company, of 21 Bloomsbury Street, London WC1B 3QN, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a device for securing at least one cable, pipe or other elongate mem ber to a support, all such elongate members, for convenience, hereinafter being included in the term "cable".
In installing single-core electric power cables in cable networks of industrial plant, it is the general practice to arrange three single core power cables alongside one another with their axes passing through the apices of a triangle, such an arrangement usually being referred to as a trefoil cable group. A trefoil cable group is usually secured to a support at spaced positions along its length by means of cleats of the kind comprising a base member adapted to be secured to the support and two arms which co-operate with the base member to form a three-sided opening in which the cables can be clamped by drawing the base member and arms towards one another. A cable cleat of this kind will herein after be referred to as "of the kind described".
It is the general practice to make the base member and arms of a cleat of the kind des cribed of cast metal or metal alloy, usually with the inwardly-facing surfaces of the base member and arms of shapes substantially com plementary to the cross-sectional shape of the cables to be clamped in the cleat. At spaced positions between the cleats, the cables of the trefoil cable group are secured together by cable straps or ties.
We have found that where a cable of a tre foil cable group is subject to a high level short circuit fault current, there is a risk that the resultant outward lateral movement of the cable will cause a cable cleat of the kind des cribed made of case metal or metal alloy, to fracture and/or will cause damage to a cable or cables of the group.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device for securing at least one cable to a support which is of such a construc tion that it will accommodate limited outward lateral movement of a cable secured by the device with negligible risk of damage to the device and/or cable.
According to the present invention the device comprises a base member adapted to be secured to a support and two arms which may or may not be integral with one another, which co-operate with the base member to form a three-sided opening in which a cable or group of two or more cables can be arranged, and means for drawing the base member and arms towards one another to secure the cable or group of cables in said opening; wherein the arms of the device are elongate members of a resilient metal or resilient metal alloy, and, the inwardly-facing surface of the base mem ber and of each arm carries a cushioning layer of compressible material, the arrange ment being such that, when the cable or one of the cables secured in the opening moves lateral) I outward due to a short circuit fault current or other cause, such outward lateral movement will be accommodated by compression of at least one of the cushioning layers and/or by the resilience of the elongate member or members.
Preferably, the base member is also an elon gate member of a resilient metal or metal alloy and, where the arms are not integral with one another, the base member may be integral with one of the arms but, preferably, the base mem ber and arms are three separately formed elon gate members.
Preferably, each elongate member of the device is a strip of stainless steel or of other suitable resilient non-magnetic metallic material. Where each elongate member is of magnetic material, preferably the means for drawing the members about the cable or cables are of such a material and/or form that the de vice does not form a magnetic loop around the cable or cables. Where the device is formed from elongate members of magnetic material, preferably the elongate members are of such a form and/or are so inter-connected that the device does not form a magnetic loop around the cable or cables; for example, the elongate members may each be completely covered by an electrically insulating material and this covering of insulated material may constitute the cushioning layer of compressible material.
The means for drawing the base member and arms about the cable or cables to secure the cable or cables in the device may be bolts of metal alloy having the necessary tensile strength, bolts of high tensile stainless steel being preferred.
Preferably, the holes in the arms where they are drawn towards the base member and/or the holes in the base member are slots so that the device will accommodate any cable or cables of a diameter lying within a limited range of diameters.
Preferably the compressible material of each cushioning layer has oil-resistant properties, a preferred material being an oil-resistant natural or synthetic rubber. Each layer may be permanently bonded or otherwise permanently secured to the inwardly-facing surface of each elongate member or it may be detachably secured thereto, for example by making each cushioning layer of a preformed shape such that it is a snap fit on a member. The internal surface of each cushioning layer may be of planar form or it may be of a shape complementary to the cross-sectional shape of the cable or group of cables to be secured in the device.
In most circumstances, the bolts used to connect the base member to the adjoining ends of the arms may be employed to secure the device to a support and, in this case, these bolts are preferably attached to a packing member. Where the support is a wall, preferably the base member carries separate means for securing the base member thereto.
Where three cables are to be secured in the device with their axes passing through the apices of a triangle, there may be associated with the device a separately formed spacing member of compressible material having outwardly extending fins which can be arranged to lie between adjacent cables and to accommodate any inward lateral movement of a cable that may occur.
The invention is further illustrated by a description, by way of example, of two preferred forms of cable-securing device with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an end view of a cable cleat of the kind described, and Figure 2 is a fragmental transverse crosssectional view of a modification of the cleat shown in Figure 1.
In the cable cleat shown in Figure 1, a base member 1 and arms 2 and 3 are elongate members formed from stainless steel. The arms 2 and 3 and base member 1 are clamped together by bolts 4, 5 and 6 to form an approximately triangular-shaped opening 7. The arms 2 and 3 and base member I, respectively, have cushioning layers, 8, 9 and 10 of oil resistant synthetic rubber permanently bonded to their inwardlyfacing surfaces. The bolts 5 and 6 clamping the arms 2 and 3 to the base member 1 are attached to a packing member 11 ready for attaching to a support.
In the modification of the cleat shown in Figure 1, slots 12 and 13 in the arms 2 and 3 respectively, allow some movement of the arms in the direction X-X' before the arms are finally clamped to the base member I, to accommodate any cable or cables of a diameter lying within a limited range of different diameters.
In the cable cleats shown in Figures 1 and 2 a cushioning layer is compressed by any outward lateral movement of the cable or one of the cables secured in the cleat due to a short circuit fault current or other cause and reduces the risk of damage to the cleat and/or the cable.
The device of the present invention is cheap and simple to manufacture and use and will accommodate a cable or any group of cables selected from groups of cables whose overall transverse dimensions lie within a limited range of transverse dimensions.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A device for securing at least one cable to a support, which device comprises a base member adapted to be secured to a support and two arms which co-operate with the base member to form a three-sided opening in which a cable or group of two or more cables can be arranged, and means for drawing the base member and arms towards one another to secure the cable or group of cables in said opening; wherein the arms of the device are elongate members of a resilient metal or resilient metal alloy and, the inwardly facing surface of the base member and of each arm carries a cushioning layer of compressible material, the arrangement being such that, when the cable or at least one of the cables secured in the device moves laterally outward due to a short circuit fault current or other cause, such outward lateral movement will be accommodated by compression of at least one of the cushioning layers and/or by the resilience of the arms.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the two arms are integral with each other.
3. A device as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the base member is also an elongate member of a resilient metal or metal alloy.
4. A device as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the base member and the arms are three separately formed elongate members.
5. A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the base member is integral with one of the arms.
6. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the elongate members are of such a form and/or are so interconnected that the device does not form a magnetic loop around the cable or cables.
7. A device as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the elongate members are each completely

Claims (22)

The means for drawing the base member and arms about the cable or cables to secure the cable or cables in the device may be bolts of metal alloy having the necessary tensile strength, bolts of high tensile stainless steel being preferred. Preferably, the holes in the arms where they are drawn towards the base member and/or the holes in the base member are slots so that the device will accommodate any cable or cables of a diameter lying within a limited range of diameters. Preferably the compressible material of each cushioning layer has oil-resistant properties, a preferred material being an oil-resistant natural or synthetic rubber. Each layer may be permanently bonded or otherwise permanently secured to the inwardly-facing surface of each elongate member or it may be detachably secured thereto, for example by making each cushioning layer of a preformed shape such that it is a snap fit on a member. The internal surface of each cushioning layer may be of planar form or it may be of a shape complementary to the cross-sectional shape of the cable or group of cables to be secured in the device. In most circumstances, the bolts used to connect the base member to the adjoining ends of the arms may be employed to secure the device to a support and, in this case, these bolts are preferably attached to a packing member. Where three cables are to be secured in the device with their axes passing through the apices of a triangle, there may be associated with the device a separately formed spacing member of compressible material having outwardly extending fins which can be arranged to lie between adjacent cables and to accommodate any inward lateral movement of a cable that may occur. The invention is further illustrated by a description, by way of example, of two preferred forms of cable-securing device with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an end view of a cable cleat of the kind described, and Figure 2 is a fragmental transverse crosssectional view of a modification of the cleat shown in Figure 1. In the cable cleat shown in Figure 1, a base member 1 and arms 2 and 3 are elongate members formed from stainless steel. The arms 2 and 3 and base member 1 are clamped together by bolts 4, 5 and 6 to form an approximately triangular-shaped opening 7. The arms 2 and 3 and base member I, respectively, have cushioning layers, 8, 9 and 10 of oil resistant synthetic rubber permanently bonded to their inwardlyfacing surfaces. The bolts 5 and 6 clamping the arms 2 and 3 to the base member 1 are attached to a packing member 11 ready for attaching to a support. In the modification of the cleat shown in Figure 1, slots 12 and 13 in the arms 2 and 3 respectively, allow some movement of the arms in the direction X-X' before the arms are finally clamped to the base member I, to accommodate any cable or cables of a diameter lying within a limited range of different diameters. In the cable cleats shown in Figures 1 and 2 a cushioning layer is compressed by any outward lateral movement of the cable or one of the cables secured in the cleat due to a short circuit fault current or other cause and reduces the risk of damage to the cleat and/or the cable. The device of the present invention is cheap and simple to manufacture and use and will accommodate a cable or any group of cables selected from groups of cables whose overall transverse dimensions lie within a limited range of transverse dimensions. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A device for securing at least one cable to a support, which device comprises a base member adapted to be secured to a support and two arms which co-operate with the base member to form a three-sided opening in which a cable or group of two or more cables can be arranged, and means for drawing the base member and arms towards one another to secure the cable or group of cables in said opening; wherein the arms of the device are elongate members of a resilient metal or resilient metal alloy and, the inwardly facing surface of the base member and of each arm carries a cushioning layer of compressible material, the arrangement being such that, when the cable or at least one of the cables secured in the device moves laterally outward due to a short circuit fault current or other cause, such outward lateral movement will be accommodated by compression of at least one of the cushioning layers and/or by the resilience of the arms.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the two arms are integral with each other.
3. A device as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the base member is also an elongate member of a resilient metal or metal alloy.
4. A device as claimed in Claim 3, wherein the base member and the arms are three separately formed elongate members.
5. A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the base member is integral with one of the arms.
6. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the elongate members are of such a form and/or are so interconnected that the device does not form a magnetic loop around the cable or cables.
7. A device as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the elongate members are each completely
covered by an electrically insulating material and this covering constitutes the cushioning layer of compressible material.
8. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the means for drawing the base member and two arms towards one another are bolts and wherein holes in the arms and/or in the base member engaged by the bolts are slots so that the device will accommodate any cable or cables of a diameter lying within a limited range of diameters.
9. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the means for drawing the base member and two arms towards one another are bolts and the bolts used to connect the base member to the adjoining ends of the arms can be employed to secure the device to a support.
10. A device as claimed in Claim 9, wherein the bolts used to secure the device to a support are attached to a packing member.
11. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein each elongate member is a strip of stainless steel or of other suitable resilient non-magnetic metallic material.
12. A device as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 10, wherein each elongate member is a magnetic material and the means for drawing the members about the cable or cables are of such a material and/or form that the device does not form a magnetic loop around the cable or cables.
13. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the compressible material of each cushioning layer has oilresistant properties.
14. A device as claimed in Claim 13, wherein the compressible material is oil-resistant natural or synthetic rubber.
15. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein each cushioning layer is permanently bonded or otherwise permanently secured to the inwardly-facing surface of each elongate member.
16. A device as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 14, wherein each cushioning layer is detachably secured to the inwardlyfacing surface of each elongate member.
17. A device as claimed in Claim 16, wherein each cushioning layer is of a preformed shape such that it is a snap fit on an elongate member.
18. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the inwardly-facing surface of each cushioning layer is of planar form.
19. A device as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 17, wherein the inwardly-facing surface of each cushioning layer is of a shape complementary to the cross-sectional shape of the cable or group of cables to be secured in the device.
20. A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the device includes a separately formed spacing member of compressible material having outwardly extending fins which are arranged to lie between adjacent cables of three cables when secured in the device with their axes passing through the apices of a triangle, the spacing member accommodating any inward lateral movement of a cable that occurs.
21. A device for securing at least one cable to a support substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in Figure 1 or 2 of the accompanying drawings.
22. An electric power cable installation in which at least one cable is secured to a support by at least one device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims.
