Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN APPARATUS FOR USE AS A MATTRESS OR SEATS (71) We, TELISPORT LIMITED a British Company also trading as LUXI LEISURE of Bridge Works, Manchester Road, Broadheath, County of Chester, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for use as a mattress for a childs cot or push chair and a deck seat mattress.
A combined cushion or seat and carrying case has been proposed comprising at least two cushions or seats secured together by flaps provided on their edges, each having a sliding clasp fastener dividing a portion of its peripheral wall for access to its interior and including two sheets of padding material forming a storage space therebetween. The cushions being hingedly secured together with handles adapted to support a back rest cushion formed with a stiffening board inserted between padding sheets.
According to the invention apparatus for use alternatively as a mattreess and a seat comprising three or more padded sections to form the mattress and seat, the sections being enclosed end to end in a plastics or textile cover, a transverse line of welding or stitching securing to each other the opposed parts of the cover intermediate each adjacent pair of the sections and a second line of transverse welding or stitching securing to each other said opposed parts of the cover parallel to the first said line of stitching or welding and spaced therefrom a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the sections to form hinges, a reinforcing board in one or more of the sections, the sections in use lying in line to form the mattress, with two adjacent sections capable of being inclined into inverted V formation to form a back rest for a seat and the sections being capable of being folded to lie parallel one above the other for storage or transport, when not in use, and straps affixed to the edge of the cover of one end section with rings on the edge of the or an intermediate section for attachment of the straps and adapted for supporting the section in the inclined position when in use as a back rest or for carrying purposes when not in use.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mattress in the extended position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation with one section raised to form a back rest.
Figure 3 is a side elevation showing the mattress folded to form a seat and back rest.
Figure 4 is a side elevation showing the mattress folded for transport purposes.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section on line 5-5 Figure 1.
A combined mattress and deck or reclining seat A is made of three sections al, a2, a3 enclosed in a plastics or textile cover b closed at the ends and along each side. One end section al of the cover is filled with upholstery or padding and is closed transversely by welding or stitching c a second transverse line of welding or stitches being inserted to provide a hinge section of a width substantially equal to the thickness of the upholstery between the adjacent sections.
Further upholstery or padding is inserted into the cover b to form the second section a2 together with a plywood or other board a to reinforce and stiffen the upholstery. A further hinge unit c is welded or sewn between the second section and the third section a3. The third section a3 is constructed similarly to the second section a2 and the end of the cover is closed over the third section to match the closure of the end of the first section al.
The sections may be folded to lie horizontally and one above another (Figure 4) for storage purposes or may be extended in line (Figure 1 to provide a mattress A.
Rings c are affixed adjacent one end of the second or centre section a2 and straps C3 may be affixed adjacent the outer end of the third section a3.
By folding the reinforced second and third sections a2, a3 into an inverted V the first section can be used as a seat and the second and third sections as a back rest, the straps C3 being crossed and connected to the rings c1 on the second section a2 and engaging diagonal rings c1 on the second section to retain the sections at the required angle. . 3 Alternatively the third section a3 may be inclined to form a reclining seat with the first and second sections remaining horizontal (Figure 2) the third section being retained at the desired angle by the straps C3 engaging the rings c1.
Further straps C3 may be provided on the first section for use with the other straps C3 when the sections are folded together for transport to act as carrying handles.
The three sections of the mattress are preferably constructed of a length and width to serve as a childs mattress in a cot or carrying cot or pram.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. Apparatus for use alternatively as a mattress and a seat comprising three or more padded sections to form the mattress and seat, the sections being enclosed end to end in a plastics or textile cover, a trans verse line of welding or stitching securing to ; each other the opposed parts of the cover intermediate each adjacent pair of the sec tions and a second line of transverse welding or sitching securing to each other said opposed parts of the cover parallel to the first said line of stitching or welding and spaced therefrom a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the sections to form hinges, a reinforcing board in one or more of the sections, the sections in use lying in line to form the mattress, with two adjacent sections capable of being inclined into in verted V formation to form a back rest for a seat and the sections being capable of being folded to lie parallel one above the other for storage or transport, when not in use, and straps affixed to the edge of the cover of one end section with rings on the edge of the or an intermediate section for attachment of the straps and adapted for supporting the section in the inclined position when in use as a back rest or for carrying purposes when not in use.
2. Apparatus for use as a mattress or deck or reclining seat substantially as herein described with reference to the accompany ing drawings.
