(54) APPARATUS COMPRISING MEANS FOR CONVEYING
SHEETS OF PAPER AND A DEVICE FLATTENING
CURLED-UP CORNERS OF THE SHEETS
(71) We, N. V . PHILIPS'
GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, a limited liability Company, organised and established under the laws of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands, of Emmasingel 29, Eindhoven, the Netherlands do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
The present invention relates to an apparatus comprising means for conveying sheets of paper, for example, cheques, forms or bills one after the other m an upright position through a device for recording information on the sheets and/or reading information recorded on the sheets.
In an apparatus for processing cheques, for example, the cheques are conveyed one after the other to different read or recording positions by conveying means which hold the cheques over their entire length at a certain distance from the bottom edges of the cheques.
The various operations to which the cheques are subjected prior to the processing in the reading or recording device, often cause a cheque to curl up at a corner.
If a corner of a cheque is curled up over an area which extends from the bottom edge of the cheque over a distance further than the distance between the bottom edge of the cheque and the point at which the cheque will be held by the conveying means, in principle no problem exists, because the curled-up corner of the cheque will be flattened when the cheque is introduced into the conveying means and will be retained in this flattened condition by the conveying means, which are usually formed by two endless belts whih hold the cheques or other sheets between them.
If a corner of a sheet is curled up over a distance less than the distance between the bottom edge of the sheet and the conveying means, problems occur because the passage for the sheet at the area of the reading or recording heads is very narrow and the sheetmay become jammed, and even damaged, due to the presence of the curled-up corner.
According to the present invention there is provided an apparatus comprising means for conveying sheets of paper one after another in an upright position through adevice for recording information on the sheets and/or reading information recorded on the sheets, the apparatus further comprising a device for flattening curled-up corners of the sheets, which device comprises a gap formed between two upright walls which are arranged in front of the reading and/or recording device with respect to the direction of conveyance of the sheets so that a portion of each sheet passes through the gap, said walls having edges at the entrance of the gap which are inclined relative to the direction of conveyance of the sheets so that these edges extend obliquely towards the bottom of the walls in said direction of conveyance.
Preferably, said edges of the walls of the gap are rounded.
An embodiment of the invention will be described in detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sheet-conveying means and the sheetflattening device of an embodiment of an apparatus in accordance with the invention, and
Figures 2a and Xb are respective views of two flanks of a sheet-flattening device suitable for the apparatus shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a sheet of paper 1 which has a thickness e and which is curled up at a corner 11. The sheet bears recorded information - denoted by the reference numeral 12 in the drawing - at a distance y from the lower edge of the sheet. The conveying means for the sheet consist of two coupled parallel belts 2 which carry the sheet in the direction of the arrow f, the sheet being held between the belts at a distance d from the lower edge, of the sheet.
It has already been stated that in apparatus of the kind to which the invention relates, the passage for the sheets at the area of the read and recording heads is very narrow, there only being a small clearance j between the sheets and the heads, so that the passage has a width 1 = (e + j).
The sheet-flattening device in Figure 1 is denoted generally by the reference numeral 3. The device 3 is made of a rigid material for example, a synthetic resin material or a metal having a low friction coefficient. The device 3 comprises a portion 31, which may be referred to as the "active portion," and a base portion 32 which is secured to the frame of the apparatus.
The active portion 31 of the device 3 comprises two upright plates 31a and 31b of identical shape which are disposed opposite one another in planes parallel to the direction of conveyance f of the sheet 1. The plates form the walls of a gap 35 through which the lower portion of the sheet 1, i.e., the portion below the belts 2, is conveyed immediately before it reaches the read and recording heads. The wdith 1 of the gap 35, determined by the spacing between the plates, equals (e + j), and the vertical depth p of the gap is equal to or greater than d.
Each plate 31a and 31b has an upper edge 33 which extends parallel to and is spaced at a distance E from the lower edges of the belts 2, and a front edge 34 (the edge facing the approaching sheet 1) which forms an acute angle a with the upper edge 33 of the plate.
The angle a may be between 15 and 50".
The front edges 34 of the plates, which edges define the entrance of the gap 35 and are rounded so that the gap widens at the entrance, thus extend obliquely from the upper edges 33 towards the lower edges of the plates in the direction of conveyancefof the sheet 1. The lower edges of the plates adjoin the base portion 32 of the device 3.
Due to the inclination of the front edges of the walls of the gap 35, as the curled-up corner 11 of the sheet 1 enters the gap 35, one or the other of the walls of the gap, depending on the side to which the corner
11 of the sheet is curled up, uncurls the corner 11 and thereby flattens the sheet 1 for its passage past the read and recording heads (not shown). Even though the corner by curled up through more than 90" so that it forms an acute angle with the remainder of the sheet, it will be uncurled by the device 3.
The plates 31a and 31b are rounded at the corner between the upper and front edges of the plates so as to eliminate any risk of tearing the sheet 1 at this point.
The sheet-flattening device 3 shown in
Figures 2a and 2b is made in two parts 4 and 5 which are shown separated from one another in these figures and each of which comprises one of the plates 31a and 31b and a section of the base portion of the device.
The two parts 4 and 5 are secured together by screws (not shown) which pass through holes 41 in the base section of the part 4 and screw into threaded bores into the base section of the part 5. The part 5 is provided with a flange 51 in which holes 52 are provided for securing the device to the frame of the apparatus by means of screws.
The base section of the past 4 provides a shoulder 42 which, when the two parts 4 and 5 have been secured to each other, constitutes a bottom wall for the gap 35 of the sheet-flattening device. The base section of the part 5 comprises a recessed portion 53 which serves to accommodate either a read head or the front portion of a printing head.
Also, an opening 54 is provided adjacent the recessed portion 53 to enable components of the processing apparatus to be brought into contact with the sheet to be processed.
As an alternative, the part 4 need not be provided with the shoulder 42, the distance required for the formation of the gap 35 between the plates 31a and 31b then being determined by, for example, spacers.
