Description

(54) AN IMPROVED PACKAGING ARRANGEMENT (71) We, WILKIE & PAUL LIMITED, of Grove Works, Slateford Road, Edinburgh, Scotland, a British Company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a packaging arrangement and is directed more particularly, although not exclusively, to the packaging of cosmetics.
As is well known, the packaging of certain articles such as pieces of soap requires that the pieces be wrapped individually to avoid chipping, scratching or bruising of the surface. Thus, the object of the present invention is to provide a packaging arrangement which is attractive and obviates the necessity for individual wrapping of the articles.
The present invention consists in a packaging arrangement comprising a sheet of synthetic plastics material having a plurality of panels separated from one another by bend lines, each panel having a plurality of recesses aligned, respectively, with similar recesses in the adjacent panel or panels, the sheet of synthetic plastics material being foldable such that each group of aligned recesses defines an annular array of recesses, whereby, in use, each array of recesses can support an article in spaced relation to an article or articles supported in the adjacent array or arrays of recesses.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of a packaging arrangement according to the present invention Figure 2 is a side view of the packaging arrangement shown in Figure 1, but folded and partially inserted into a container which is shown in section, and Figure 3 is a view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In carrying the invention into effect according to one convenient mode, by way of example, the packaging arrangement comprises a rectangular sheet 10 thermoformed from a synthetic plastics material to provide six transversely extending panels 11 which are separated from one another by five bend lines 12.
Each panel 11 has four hollow upstanding ribs 13 arranged longitudinally of the sheet, adjacent ones of which are interconnected to form concave article-receiving recesses 14, 15 and 16.
The three recesses 14, 15 and 16 of each panel are parallel to each other and positioned in longitudinal alignment.
In use, assuming pieces of soap of generally circular configuration with a convex side wall are being packed in a cylindrical container 17, (Figures 2 and 3), the sheet 10 is folded around the soap by deformation at the bend lines 12 so that three pieces of soap are held in spaced relation by the aligned recesses 14, 15 and 16 in the panels, thus avoiding possible damage to the surfaces of the soap. The asembled sheet 10 and pieces of soap are then slid into the cylindrical container 17 and closure thereof effected by a flanged cover member 18. Alternatively, after the sheet has been folded around the soap, the adjacent ends of the sheet may be interconnected by a strip of Sellotape (Registered Trade Mark) to complete the packaging.
It will be appreciated that although a sheet having six panels each with three concave recesses therein has been described above, the number of panels and the shape of the recesses may be changed to accommodate articles of different configuration.
For example, if straight-sided pieces of soap of generally square or rectangular configuration are being packaged, a sheet having four panels with recesses of rectilinear cross-section would be provided.

Claims (6)

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A packaging arrangement comprising a sheet of synthetic plastics material having a plurality of panels separated from one another by bend lines, each panel having a plurality of recesses aligned, respectively, with similar recesses in the adjacent panel or panels, the sheet of synthetic plastics material being foldable such that each group of aligned recesses defines an annular array of recesses, whereby, in use, each array of recesses can support an article in spaced relation to an article or articles supported in the adjacent array or arrays of recesses.
2. A packaging arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein the recesses are of concave cross-section.
3. A packaging arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein the recesses are of rectilinear cross-section.
4. A packaging arrangement as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, wherein adjacent recesses in each panel are separated from one another by hollow upstanding ribs.
5. A packaging arrangement as claimed in any of the preceding claims in combination with a container, the sheet after folding, being slid into said container.
6. A packaging arrangement substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
